The LOUNGE
CHART ATTACK
Jitesh Pillaai concludes the series on his favourite music albums in
the last 25 years

AASHIQUI (1990)
We tolerated Rahul Roy's asinine hair style and Anu Agarwal's comatose
acting, simply because Nadeem-Shravan gave us nuggets like Dheere
dheere se, Nazar ke saamne and Mera dil tere liye. Anuradha Paudwal's
range and breath control was astonishing in Saanson ki zaroorat. What
really happened to this wonderful singer, who reigned in the '90s with
T-Series, and her songs in Saajan, Dil, Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin and Beta?

ROJA (1992)
He burst on the scene like those sensational debuts we see only on
screen. AR Rahman heralded the new sound of the '90s. Chhoti si asha,
Yeh haseen vaadiya and the title track were nothing like we had heard
before. And don't forget the bawdy Rukumani. Mani Ratnam and Rahman
made Mumbai's moghuls sit up and take notice.

1942-A LOVE STORY (1994)
What a swan song! Shame on everyone who neglected RD during his final
years. Vinod Chopra was the only man with gumption. So it reigned
melodies with Kuch na kaho, Pyaar hua and Rim jhim. This was Pancham
at his heartbreaking best. Perhaps in the song Yeh safar bahut hai
kathin, he was trying to tell us all something. Only it was too late
by then.

RANGEELA (1995)
Asha Bhosle made yet another comeback, and Rahman became the
undisputed No 1 composer of all times. Rangeela re, Tanha tanha saw
the songstress in her vocal apogee. The other duets like Aiyayo and
Hai Rama too buoyed up the popularity charts. Asha at 60-plus had more
dum than the 20-something remix ranis.

DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAYENGE (1995)
Poor Jatin-Lalit, they always lost the Filmfare award to Rahman. That
year, DDLJ lost out to Rangeela. But, Jatin-Lalit notched up a truly
terrific score. Tujhe dekha to yeh jaana sanam, Zara sa jhoom loo
mein, Na jaane mere, Ruk jaa may have lost, but were tributes to
Panchamda as well as to the first flush of love.

DIL SE (1998)
What Rahman could do, no one else would ever dare. Lataji was at her
tantalising best with Jiya jale. For that dash of vim, there was
Rahman's tiramisu vocals going Dil se re, dil se re. Sonu Nigam was in
fine fettle in Satrangi re. And then there was the agonising Ae
ajnabi. Ah, the joys of listening to Gulzar's poesy about loneliness.

TAAL (1999)
S u b h a s h Ghai knew to tap the mu s i c a l pulse of his c o m p o
s e r s . Pardes was a high point, yes, but Taal was the mother of all
beats with Ishq bina kya and Ramta jogi. While Hariharan lulled you
into a beatific state with Nahin samne, Ashaji whipped up the frenzy
to a dizzying crescendo with Kahin aag lage.

HUM DIL DE CHUKE SANAM (1999)
Bhansali is another new age filmmaker with a keen ear for music. Like
Khamoshi, HDDCS showed us his métier. Jhonka hawa ka, Chaand chhupa
badal mein, Nimbooda and Dholi taro showed us Ismail Darbar's terrific
range (under Bhansali's strict supervision, of course). Darbar rustled
up a storm of melodies, just like he did with Devdas.

L A G A A N (2001)
R a h - man sir and Javed Akhtar churned out yet another chartbuster.
There are those who love Ghanan ghanan and there are those who trip on
Mitwa. Every song was a gem, every tune crafted to perfection. My
favourites? Undoubtedly, Lata's O palan haare and finally, the
magnificent Madhuban mein jo kanhaiyya. Sung with gusto by the one and
only Asha Bhosle.

DIL CHAHTA HAI (2001)
Shankar Ehsaan Loy, who had little luck with scores like Dillagi, hit
pay dirt with DCH. Abetted by Javed Akhtar's lyrics, Tanhai and the
title track set the mood for yuppie love. Koi kahe and Jaane kyon
further buoyed up the spirit of Farhan Akhtar's truly ebullient venture.

DEVDAS ( 2002)
Bhansali scored one more time. Maar dala was chiselled to near
perfection, as was Silsila yeh chahat ka. And, Dola re dola sung wth
aplomb by Kavita Krishnamurthy and Shreya Ghoshal. Bhansali must be
thanked for Ghoshal's honeyed vocals.

Surprisingly, the last three years haven't been musically fecund.
Which is why the album listings stop in 2002. Appropriately,
Bhansali's Black, which released this year, didn't have any songs. A
reflection of the not-so-melodic times we live in, perhaps?
