what is the criteria for being a musical legend ? knowing all ragaas? or being praised by some so called "old time legends"? or because of the same cliche, "Taking the indian music to international audience"
When someone travels to success with a road that is untravelled, he becomes remembered forever. knowlege of ragas, number of hit albums and number of international projects really does not matter at all. Ilayaraja might have created great music, but failed to innovate! he followed what just what others were doing, and he became a big success in doing that! so, he is a legend in tamil music! but his music fails to capture the attention of young generation.. As far as a person like me is concerned, who does not know tamil, it is the music that will grab my attention, not the cultural flavours and spices thrown in to the beats and melody! Ilayaraja is said to have created music based on folks and raagas, but attracted only a class of people. RD Burman brought in new sounds and feel of music. he revolutionized the sound and introduced technology in hindi music at that time. his music was rich in melody, fresh sound and never was a crap! so he is a legend. he took a road, untravelled. Ismail Darbar, besides his rude attitude, no respect for others, has created good music for just two movies.. Hum dil de chuke sanam and Devdas. the music in these films were lengendry! it had all the flavours of hindustani classical and folk. But he failed to keep his feet on the ground. in the coming years, he will be remembered as the most arrogant composer who has just happened to create a few good musical numbers.. but undoubtedly, the songs of hum dil de chuke sanam and devdas will be remembered for ever.. Vidyasagar is the first musician after AR rahman to use melody with technology in south. he totally changed the face of Malayalam Film songs. and in Malayalam film music, the album Pranaya varnangal is considered as one of the best music albums ever happened in Kerala.. for malayalees, Vidyasgar is a legend, though he is from some other state! and now AR Rahman - I would say, he is the only one who is beyond the term legend! he's much more than that.. when he entered the music scene, everyone thought he's a one time wonder, then people accused him for using technology.. now waiting outside his studio to get a glance of him!! ar rahman is much more than a legend, the wizard who redefined almost everything in music. and day by day, innovating, and adapting new methods, technology and style in to his music. his music breaks the language barriers and speaks out from the heart.. and there is no cultural boudaries in his music.. be it a kashmiri, bangali, punjabi, gujarati, tamilian, or keralite, or even chinese, malay and europeans, all enjoy his music just because it is fresh, and just great! long live arr! --- In [email protected], "anushanand" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Way to go!
