For the people who compare Rahman to other MD's, first, try to understand and decide what music is to you, what it means to you. Is it just loud noise, you can shake your body to, it is just some thumping sound to wake your neighbors up, is it a test drive for your ear drums and to see how well they can handle high decibel sound with very high and low frequencies, is it just something you listen to in the club? In answering these questions, you will know what Rahman's music means to you.
To answer the question of other MD's surpassed Rahman and Rahman has lot his touch, bring up Winamp or where ever you store your Rahman library, set it on Random and let it play for 1 hour. You will have your answer fair and square. It is also important to have both Tamil and Hindi library to understand Rahman's calibre. Tamil and Hindi industries demand different style of music, and Rahman has created master pieces in both areas. So, if you are only a Tamil listener or only a Hindi listener then you only know half of Rahman. I'm a regular visitor of this group, I was away for a few days, when I checked back on messages, saw this whole thread of other MD's surpassed and the whole comparison thing. I have a feeling people just post messages because they are bored or have nothing better to do...."other md's have surpassed Rahman"? I think it will be a great while before anyone can ever come close to what Rahman has accomplished in India. We have many a time ran into fuss just comparing Rahman to IR. That topic to date, remains unresolved. Now, people start comparing aira ghaira nattu khaira to Rahman. If you really want to compare Rahman to other music directors, make sure you do it on all levels. Not just, what is hot these days. I recently ran into a Tupac fan who started to claim how great Tupac was, no one can be like him...and so on. It only took me a while, before I exploded in front of him, with praise for Rahman. He could not argue with me for too long. Not to say, Tupac was bad, but you can not compare him to Rahman, Tupac has not done anything close to what Rahman has done. Tupac's was an individual struggle, to become a gangster and make money through his gansta lyrics. Unfortunately, that is what music is for American youth, bling bling, cars, drugs, girls and guns. If your perception of 'music' is same, you will also say Tupac has surpassed Rahman in music. So, please think twice before comparing Rahman to others. With due respect to all other MD's, I can not even compose a 5 second jingle, I have no right to critisize any MD, but I know what good music is. Other MD's have their days, they are never consistent like Rahman. Commercial success or not, his music is beyond masterpiece. These days the movies itself are failures. There is barely any good movies out, if a movie like Swades could not get an award for the film or the music, nothing can be guaranteed about anything. Mangal Mangal is a masterpiece with no electronic instruments used in the year 2005!! Regards. ------------------------ Yahoo!
