Urmila and Shyam Benegal reunite
Mid-day

Urmila Matondkar has just signed Shyam Benegal’s next project, a musical love
story based in
the colourful locales of Rajasthan. This marks their reuniting after 25 years…

On floors in winter

hitList talked to Benegal, who confirmed that he had signed Urmila for his next
project
scheduled to begin sometime in mid-November.

Elaborating about the film, he said, “It’s a classic love story and a musical.
It has lots of
music, and we’ve signed on AR Rehman as the music director. Shama Zaidi has
scripted the film
and I’ve also added my inputs. I want to shoot the film in winter as it’s set
in Rajasthan.”

Matondkar again

Benegal refused to divulge too many details of this hush-hush project. Even the
title is not
being revealed at the moment. So, why did he sign Urmila? “She’s a very good
actor. I have
worked with her before, in her debut film, Kalyug.

She’s also acted in a short TV story of mine called Letter, at the age of 12.
It was based on
an adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s story,” says Benegal. Interestingly, in
Kalyug, Urmila had
played Rekha and Raj Babbar’s son.

Bonding with Benegal

Urmila is thrilled about her role. She gushed,” It’s one of the most exciting
roles of my
career. It’s a very strong character, the kind you haven’t seen on screen
before. You will
either love her or hate her but the character is not grey. She’s just human.”

“Shyamji has always been a great director. I have already gained so much
insight on my
character, just through our initial meetings.

He is an extremely well read and aware person. His style of working is very
different from the
filmmakers I have worked with. I realized that even as a kid, when I did
Kalyug.”

Always a mainstream girl

Urmila has some more interesting projects this year — Anupam Kher’s Maine
Gandhi Ko Nahi Mara,
Pankaj Parasher’s Benares and now with Benegal’s film; her cup runneth over.

“Yes,” she smiles, “I have an exciting mix of roles this year. But at the end
of the day, I am
a mainstream girl. Even Shyamji’s film has lots of music and dancing, which I
love. I have
always enjoyed doing that the most and I can’t imagine being away from that.”

nation."
