Celebs to rock for a cause
HT Correspondent

Delhiites will get an opportunity to see live shows of some of their favourite
singers and
actors over the next couple of weekends. The stars of course won't just be
singing and dancing
on the stage but would be sending across social messages on poverty and
disability through the
concerts.

The first on the concert list is AR Rahman. He has been roped for a poverty
concert this
weekend. Rahman will perform in Old Delhi on Saturday for a host of Asian and
NGOs that hope to
raise money to fight poverty.

Rahman, goodwill ambassador for the STOP TB partnership for the WHO, will be
joined on stage by
popular Pakistani pop band Junoon's lead guitarist Salman Ahmed.

On September 17, Shahrukh Khan will lead an ensemble of Hindi film stars to
spread the message
for the ‘national campaign for a barrier free India’.

Javed Abidi, who has been fighting for the rights of the disabled, said, “the
campaign was
launched in Delhi on August 15 by the chief minister. We are trying to take it
forward. Our
main issue is that of access. That means, buildings should be changed as to
make them disabled
friendly. Through the concert and through film stars, we would be trying to
send the message across.”

"We neglect our cities at our peril. For, in neglecting them, we neglect the
nation."
-John F. Kennedy
