After listening to an entire range of ARR's albums till date, I have never been able to completely agree with an entire album at one go. There have always been songs which I would carefully avoid listening to in comparison to other songs in the album. For example: ayyo pathikichu in rhythm when you could really melt into the beauty of nathiye nathiye...  (this is my humble opinion, i dont want to ruffle any feathers)... However, in case of Water, the entire album was agreeable to me. Every song is a wonder in its own right. I had never imagined Gandhiji's favorite bhajan to have been immortalised this beautifully. What ARR did to Vande Mataram, he probably did more to Vaishnava Jan To. Other songs also are immensely beautiful. Srivatsa has commented that you can listen to the songs as is. Thats exactly why these songs are so immensely beautiful. You could tolerate Madhusree's Tamizh in that Sanda Kozhi song because of the beautiful orchestration. Madhushree might not be able to sing so flawlessly any of the Water songs. It takes a genius to sing these songs so beautifully. Sukhi, as ARR so lovingly called Sukhwinder Singh at the Bangalore concert, is a true and genuine singer. I had told a friend that Water is a puritan's delight. Music for the sake of itself, untainted and pure. Every song has a Hindustani Classical Raga base.
Personally, I vote Water as ARR's best yet. I was not surprised when ARR himself said this. Being a brilliant composer himself, I believe he said this because of the breadth of range that he could experiment with. And that too with voice alone. Thats pure music. Thats why classical is so difficult and so timeless.
