This particular question is difficult to answer(so i can make mistakes - I m no researcher).
Tribes(around 6) used to live around finland where they had 1 std frmt for writing finnish.These tribal ppl never knew abt other tribal ppl using similar script).But each tribe chngd the pronounciation over the time.varttina sing in a dialect that was follwed by karjala tribe which is same as karelian.Different tribes also chngd the original script so now the script is slightly differnt (along with pronounciations which are quite differnt)Now after the world war 2 these territories where karjala -dialect was spoken went into russia(i thnk so).Karelian republic now is in russia.But these ppl are actually finnish.So often these songs are refferd as russian karelian folk songs. Anyways many of them prefer FINNISH - KARELIAN FOLK Songs.
