Now starring Mahabharata
`The Mahabharata is the greatest story ever told and we plan to tell
it in style. It'll be bigger than The Lord of the Rings'
Harneet Singh

THE Lord of the Rings, better watch out. Boby Bedi has ambitious plans
to make his Mahabharata grander than the Hollywood spectacle. Bedi
unveiled the details of his Rs 100 crore dream at IFFI 2005, Goa,
where he's screening his latest production Shadows of Time, ``The
Mahabharata is the greatest story ever told and we plan to tell it in
style. It'll be bigger than The Lord of the Rings,'' he said. Bedi
plans to make three feature films out of the epic. Each film, of two
hours duration will deal with an important chunk of Mahabharata. He
has organised a group of 17 researchers who are poring over the eras
and modes of that time.

Mani Ratnam has been signed as the director for all three films. Plans
are also underway to make a 100-hour TV serial on Mahabharata. ``If I
have my own way I'd like to commission the television serial in such a
way that every Indian anywhere in the world can watch it on any
channel network,'' he said. Bedi is upbeat about the TV serial. ``See,
the drama in Mahabharata is in the same vein of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi
Bahu Thi,'' he says.

The first film in the series will roll in 2007. Though he's
tight-lipped about the casting, he confirms that he's been talking to
all the three Khans: Aamir, Salman and Shah Rukh. ``We're in touch but
nothing has been decided. I can't tell you who's playing what.''

Bedi has a hectic year ahead. He plans to release Mangal Pandey: The
Rising for the US market in the first quarter of 2006. The Aamir Khan
starrer has been cut to size by two hours minus the songs. Ask him if
he's satisfied with the final results of The Rising, he quips, ``Is
any producer ever happy with the performance of any film?''

That says it then.
