You make a good point as well, about ARR's music in Shankar's films.
For that matter even his recent KKS and Boyz did hit the crowd well.
However, one should note that YashRaj,etc are from north. One of my
north indian friend simply hated Shakalaka Baby from Nayak..and it
went on to become a masterpiece of Bombay Dreams. So, it does appear
that the taste of the north indian can differ quite a bit. 

I guess, one might argue that Taal and Lagaan did do weel in north
India. However, it does require a Subash Ghai or Ashutosh Gowariker to
put out the best. And yet, as I pointed out earlier, and still do
believe -- humming Kuch kuch hota hai is easier than Ishq Bina. 

I also find it quite interesting that some of the other ARR fans
believe ARR should give music for YashRaj films, in order to have a
hit. I pity that they don't understand the basic objective of ARR and
his music. I believe ARR will always want to have the opportunity to
experiment and try new things..and that's why rarely does his music
follow a 'same path'. Many people mind find his music repetitive, but
the only repetition is the constant change, IMHO! 

Now, when we consider YashRaj films -- they are the direct opposite
idealogy! They have a formula - love story, rain songs, Switerland,
SRK, emotion scenes, festivals (Karva chauth, Valentine's)..and they
seem to be content with doing that, as long as its a hit. Their
objective is a hit, not a masterpiece of excellence in art. While
ARR's objective is NOT a hit, but a masterpiece! 

Do you think ARR would be able to give gems like Tehzeeb, TLOBS, Bose
-- if the director's objective was just a commercial hit?

Aah..well, if you think ARR should be working with directors like
Sanjay Bhansali or Farah Akhtar -- that could definately make
sense..as these directors try to achieve something beyond a 'formula'
 -- a Black or a Dil Chahta Hai/Lakshya.

Well, enough of writing..and I just awaiting this Thursday for the
release of RDB!!!  (coincedently the initials of one of my other fav
music director!!)
