Audio Review : Rehman striking the perfect chord

Director: Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra
Cast: Aamir Khan, Madhavan, Atul Kulkarni, Waheeda Rehman, Om Puri,
Anupam Kher, Kirron Kher, Sharman Joshi, Kunal Kapoor, Soha Ali Khan
Music: A.R.Rehman

The title of the film might give an implication of being of the
periodic kind, but the truth is that Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's `Rang
De Basanti' is very much a contemporary film. This is the second film
of Rakeysh who had formerly directed `Aks'. Playing the lead is Aamir
Khan and his fans who had been disappointed with his last release
`Mangal Pandey-The Rising' are looking for a different Aamir in this
film. Others in the cast include Madhavan, Atul Kulkarni, Waheeda
Rehman, Om Puri, Anupam Kher, Kirron Kher, Sharman Joshi, Kunal Kapoor
and Soha Ali Khan. After `Lagaan' and `Mangal Pandey', A.R.Rehman
composes music for yet another Aamir Khan film. Prasoon Joshi has
penned the lyrics.

The album begins with a petite number `Ik Onkar'. Sounding more
devotional the song is crooned by Harshdeep Kaur. Though it's small
and short it gives a very good beginning to the soundtrack.

The title song `Rang De Basanti' comes up next with a bang. With a
bang we say, because he hear the king of bhangra Daler Mehendi behind
the mike to do the crooning. The mood transforms into celebration as
the high charged song sets in, and Daler leaves no efforts to make the
song a rocking one. Chitra does her part, nothing much to talk about.
Another smashing track for which Rehman will be remembered for long.

A true A.R.Rehman trademark track come up next with `Paathshala'. The
song has the essence of friendship and party and gives a hint to the
youthful theme in the film. Debutante Naresh Iyer and Mohamed Aslam
lend their vocals for the song. Good pace, foot tapping music and the
western feel makes this song awesome. There is another version of the
song `Paathshala – Be A Rebel', with Blaaze coming in to join the two
singers.

Melody sets in with `Tu Bin Bataye' that gives yet again a good
impression of A.R.Rehman with such kinds of numbers. Madhushree who
has delivered great numbers like `Kabhi Neem Neem,' and `Hum Hain Is
Pal' delivers another astounding song. The simplicity in melody and
note works to the credit of the track. Prasoon Joshi does a wonderful
job with the words. Naresh Iyer plays a cameo doing a small part of
the number. This is one of the wonderful songs heard in a long time!

Working on variety, there comes `Khalbali' on the tune of Arabian
music. Three male singers A R Rahman, Mohamed Aslam and Nacim do the
crooning. Don't jump at any conclusion hearing the song at the first
instance. Let it grow on you. The nuances of the orchestra and the
magic of Rehman will make its impact felt.

`Khoon Chala' is a slow and situational number rendered by Mohit
Chauhan. Who? The guy from the band Silk Route who enthralled you,
spellbind once again with this number. With a good mix of melody and
pop feel, this is another song that should work to the credit of the
album.

Great Lata Mangsehskar and versatile Rehman come together to render a
very beautiful song about a mother's appeal wanting her son back
called `Luka Chupi'. A superb and somber track with simple music makes
for an enchanting go.

Prasoon Joshi's lyrics is the strength of the next track `Lalkaar'.
Recited by Aamir Khan, this is a track with patriotic flavor and looks
more situational.

The album comes to a close with `Rubaroo'. A R Rahman and Naresh Iyer
do the singing for this number. With a good rhythm, pop style
decorated with some good lyrics, this is another creditable song of
the album. Though the number is absolutely situational, Rehman has
given some special touch to make it sound appealing to the youth.

`Rang De Basanti' might prove to be the album that can regain Rehman's
lost glory in Bollywood music. The music has the ingredients that
appeals, will be adored by the youths and also works according to the
theme of the film. The music definitely works positive!
