I think shankar deserves the praise. This movie was diffeent in the
sense that it did not have a serial killer lead role, a colledge
student or an unlucky victim of sociopolitics like in Gentleman ect.
It has a mature theme and social message. It could have
gone down tamil film history as one of the best flms ever made but
sadly it did not do so at least in that sense. Besides the music of
ARR was not up to par compared to previous shankar/ARR combos like
gentleman and khadalan. What exactly let down the movie was the wrong
choice of actress for the marketing power. Manisha Koirala was losing
her popularity in tamil in the late 90s after along absence after
Bombay. Besides her overall aged dappearance was not good as to
compared in Bombay... Rumours way back in 97 predicted Aishwarya Rai
or Laila could have landed the role . Preferably Laila could have been
a better choice

and the music of ARR which was in a grey area. Except for 2 tracks
Shakalakka baby and Kurrukku sirtuhalavale, which both had an initial
impact but not long lasting enough especially when in 99 there was
competition from Yuvan Shankar Raja and Deva's projects wooing the
filmgoers
This movie may have been the weakest music link of ARR-shankar combo
in their careers.
