FILM: Rang De Basanti
DIRECTOR: Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra
ACTORS: Aamir Khan, Siddharth Suryanarayan, Atul Kulkarni, Kunal Kapoor,
Sharman, Soha Ali Khan, Madhavan, Alice Pattern, Waheeda Rehman

When it comes to experimenting with one's look, Aamir Khan has always been open
to it – from his goatee in Dil Chahta Hain, to the moustached martyr in Mangal
Pandey and now the maverick DJ look in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's Rang De
Basanti.

“The film is about awakening; about standing up for ones beliefs, where the
rebellion spirit transcends time and age. A young idealistic English filmmaker,
Sue, arrives in India to make a film on Indian revolutionaries like Bhagat
Singh and Chandrashekhar Azad to name a few. Through her film, Sue wishes to
showcase to the world the efforts of these young revolutionaries and the
enormity of their contribution to the freedom movement in India. Owing to lack
of funds, she recruits five students from the Delhi University to act in her
docu-drama. These youngsters could be anyone from among us and their lives
mirror the kind of lives the youth of today lead; namely a self-centred and
materialistic existence where ideas like patriotism and making a change are
restricted to only history books,” says Mehra.

Incidentally Aamir Khan charged a whopping sum of seven crores from producer
Bobby Bedi for The Rising and the buzz making the rounds is that, UTV also paid
a hefty amount to Aamir for this film. “I will not like to comment on the seven
crores. But we have paid what was professionally required; an amount we cannot
disclose,” says producer Ronnie Screwvala.

But judging at Aamir's box office record, does he justify a remuneration of a
few crores? “It's an excellent script and Aamir in the lead role makes the
project lucrative,” adds Screwwala. It is alleged the Aamir will not partake in
any promotional campaign of the film because of his impending marriage to Kiran
Rao.

“Aamir is completely involved in the promotion and marketing of the film. He
recently launched the music at Planet M and this week he will be seen walking
the ramp wearing the specially designed Rang De Basanti collection that
Provogue will be launching. Aamir will also be travelling all over the country
for the road shows of Rang De Basanti,” informs Screwvala. The film will have
national release on January 20.

WHAT IS THE FILM ALL ABOUT?
A British filmmaker Sue comes to India to make a film on freedom fighters when
she stumbles into a DJ (Aamir Khan). Although he passed out of college five
years ago he continues to be a part of the University because he feels the
outside world doesn't have much to offer him. The other characters are Karan
(Siddharth) – the son of industrialist Rajnath Singhania who shares an
uncomfortable relationship with his father, but continues to live off him
grudgingly. Aslam (Kunal Kapoor) is the middle-class Muslim boy who lives in
the bylanes near Jama Masjid and is the poet, philosopher and guide to his
friends. Sukhi (Sharman Joshi), the group's baby is innocent and has a weakness
for girls. Laxman Pandey (Atul Kulkarni), the fundamentalist in the group is
the only one who believes that politics can be used as a tool to better the
world. Finally Sonia (Soha Ali Khan); the sole girl in the group is a tomboy
and is engaged to Ajay (Madhavan); the dashing air pilot. The film takes you
though the transformation in the mindsets of this group of friends - where
Sue's film makes DJ and his friends recognise and celebrate the courage and
spirit of these freedon fighters. The film is a narrative on the changing
perspective and values of this group while they shoot for the film.
