Oh!! he is the one who stands at the center of the stage with a stick and shoos the flies away so that they don't disturb the performing musicians :)
On a serious note, although he looks not so important he helms the performance by co-ordinating all the instruments. Most important of all, making sure that musicians express what exactly the composer intended to. Since they don't play instruments they have to use their baton(stick), hands and facial _expression_ to bringout the mood of the song. It is the most difficult job as it involves a deep understanding of the piece you are conducting along with a strong musical background. There are very few composers who can conduct music. I think IR has done it and ARR also had attempted conducting a symphony once.
