PEAKPROFILE with Naresh Iyer Sing with me Iyer is thrilled to be A R Rahman's choice for Rang De Basanti Debanjana Chaudhuri
http://cities.expressindia.com/fullstory.php?newsid=163283 THE Rang De Basanti trailor on television sends 24-year-old Naresh Iyer scooting to the living room. But Aamir Khan isn't the cause of the adrenaline high. Iyer has sung three songs for the film—Paathshaala with Aslam, a duet Tu Bin Bataye with Madhushree and the solo Rubaroo, his personal favourite. ``The simplicity of the tune played on just the guitar makes it very hummable,'' says Iyer, who performed at the Provogue and Rang De Basanti promotional fashion show, sharing the platform with the likes of Daler Mehndi, Ganesh Acharya and Blaze. The euphoric audience reaction explains why A R Rahman chose Iyer among the 25 contestants of the Super Singer competition held by Channel [V] this year. ``I always try to emote while I sing. That could be a reason why Rahman Sir chose me to work with him,'' says Iyer, who idolises the composer. Advertisement A Carnatic and blues music fan, this commerce graduate from SIES, Sion, was pursuing Chartered Accountancy when he decided to give music a shot. Iyer then trained in Carnatic and Hindustani classical. ``I believe it's necessary to gain some kind of training. It accustoms the singer to different styles, genres and tunes,''he says. Iyer's inclination towards music started with college festivals. He confesses to bunking numerous classes to participate in singing contests. What initially was fun, took a serious turn when he started winning. ``These fests played a great role in building my confidence and personality,'' says Iyer, reminiscing the ``best days'' of his life. It was only after the recognition he earned in college that Iyer contemplated a career as a singer. ``I have realised that these days, non-academic professions are also held in high esteem. I wanted to explore something that would give me job satisfaction,'' he says. With work gradually coming in, Iyer today concentrates completely on his singing career. He has also sung for a few Tamil films. The happy-go-lucky crooner's motto: ``When you want to do something, never be suspicious of its drawbacks. Pursue it with no regrets.'' Still embarrassed of his popularity and learning to deal with it, Iyer believes, ``If you can involve the listener with your songs, you know your purpose is solved.''
