For me, influence of ARR has been far reaching than I would have imagined. I used to play Tabla for my school music groups (I don't think I can call them bands) and my strong point was the triplets that were common in almost all the songs produced then
When "Roja" was released, it sounded different and I liked the rhythm but then I wasn't carried away.
A year later, "Thiruda Thiruda" was released and that changed the whole equation. I had read (Kalki or Kumudham, the Tamil fort-nightly) that most of the music was being churned out using a computer, electronic synthesizers and he had used a 16 track- multi track recorder for the first time in India. (It took 2 years for me to realize that it takes a genius behind the keyboard to churn out soul stirring music and not just a key press). I still hold grudge against those magazines for corrupting my fragile little mind.
It was 90's and our school had BBC Micro computers which had a BASIC interpreter and we were supposed to write programs to solve mathematical problems on it.
With innocence (ignorance?) of a school kid we set out to reproduce "Veera Pandi Kotaiyele" on our BBC microcomputer which had built in speakers. Needless to say our code produced only noise, startling the whole class and the perpetrators were led on a forced march to the school Principal's office.
By the time I finished the school and started the under
graduate course, my computer and music aspirations had faded away and I was
studying Physics. Then came "Kadhalan" and "Rangeela" in succession. Now, that
was too much for me to handle and it let out the sound designer demon from the
bottle.
Fast forward few years… and now I am working at Digidesign, still aspiring to be a good sound designer and
musician and all credit goes to ARR and his music.
What else do I need, other than the thought that the products
I work on play some role at ARR's Studio.
BTW I am still looking for that computer which would produce instant magical super hits with a key press. If you find it, you know how to reach me …..
