Reputable film director Shyam Benegal says Indian films ignore rural
realities

13:45 2006-01-17
Film directors from India tend to concentrate on urban themes and
ignore the stories of the country's rural majority, said Shyam
Benegal, one of India's best known Hindi film directors.
"Today's films are completely city or urban oriented, because the
aspirations of the Indian masses lie in the cities," Benegal
reportedly told Press Trust of India. "Even the rural Indian audience
would not want to watch a film set in a rural backdrop," he was quoted
as saying by PTI.

In a career spanning three decades, Benegal has made 24 movies and
more than 45 documentaries. He's considered one of the pioneers of the
so-called new Indian cinema movement, which bloomed in the 1970s and
early 1980s by focusing on realistic themes in movies.

His quartet of early films, starting with "Ankur" or "The Seedling,"
introduced a stable of powerful actors, including Shabana Azmi,
Naseeruddin Shah and Om Puri.

Even though India's metropolises dominate Hollywood movies, "the
cities which are shown in mainstream Indian films are not the real
Indian cities," Benegal was quoted by PTI as saying.

Rather than showing the grim realities of the urban _ and rural _
poor, Bollywood tends to focus on affluent urbanites, the 71-year-film
director reportedly lamented.

"Documentaries are still dealing with reality. They are taking up
issues which confront society," he was quoted as saying. "But
unfortunately, there are very few takers for such films."

Benegal said he had begun work on his next Hindi film, a musical with
songs composed by A. R. Rahman, one of India's top music directors.

"We are doing the music now. Shooting for the film has not started
yet," he reported, informs the AP

Regards,

Shah Navas

I do have photos, but there are people in these photos (my wife,
close associate of ARR) who do not want their pictures to be
revealed. Otherwise, I would gladly send them.

Subject: A.R.RAHMAN as the singer

Hi all,
I think we have discussed about our maestro as a prolific composer but
now time has come when one should look at his singing capabilities as
well.
Personally i feel that ARR is a phenomenal singer and sometimes his
rendition actually lifts the song and may overpower his music which is
a rarity though. But just sample a few songs of ARR:
1.Vande Mataram: What better way to show the love for ur country.A
common thing in Rahman song is that he sings at a high pitch..which
tried by most singers is i thnk quite difficult since it strains ur
vocal chords to the maximum and thts exactly what he does..just try it
out guys it's not at all easy..after hearing this song i am sure u
will feel more for ur country

2.Dil Se: Well what one can say abt this song...Just note the emotions
in this song...the passion portrayed in this song is just
phenomenal...it's as if Rahman singing his heart out which has been
enhanced by the picturisation of the number..In this song he also
proves that he can sing in a very soft and soothing and a lower
pitched voice as well...in one word just Amazing!!!

3.Chale Chalo(Lagaan): Well to describe this number i still remember
the interview which was given by Javed Akhtar on MTV before releasing
of the movie. After he penned the lyrics he knew it was Rahman who can
croon this number since his voice has that frenzy which is quite
unique and can really charge up people around you which was perfect in
context of the movie...Excellent crooning by the maestro.

4.Yeh jo Des hain Tera(Swades):In one word after listening to this
song all NRI'S will really feel to come back to their country..Is
there any better way to express one's emotion of yearning for one's
motherland??i think no song of all ages taken together can match this
number for it's sheer quality and emotion..another softly rendered
song by the Master

Tamil songs:I am not a Tamilian nor i understand even a bit of this
language but with Rahman's music it has generated a lot of interst in
me for Tamil numbers and i can claim i have a fair collection not only
of ARR but also YSR and HJ.

1.Vellai Pookal:Ohhh what a number..Do i really have words to describe
this?A song so soft, soothing and as if a ray of hope amidst all
destruction..Full of emotions..i am sure this song can make u
cry..Hats off to Rahman..minimum instruments and maximum impact..a
song totally heightened by his singing alone..Awesome!!!

2.Aah Aah(Anbe Aariyure): Title track..full techno and hip hop..the
song sounds like the entry of the God of Music ARR..Ohh gr8 singing
full of spunk and attitude written all over the song..as if addressing
people that :"I am going to compose for Tamil Films as well"

But i thnk this was not enough: Our boss has come up with another
exceptional track..i have kept this separate because this song has a
universal appeal.yes u guessed it..

Luka Chuppi(Rang De Basanti): Wow!!!What do i say??Singing with Lata
Mangeshkar and u still notice his voice more than our very own
nightingale of India..It's really an experience u need to feel and for
that u need to listen to this number..the pain expressed by ARR of
staying away from her mother actually shows the amount of love and
respect he actually has for his mother..and to top it all the alaap at
the end was like a sweet and a big cherry on a huge chocolate cake
gr8 Master...Hats off to you..and i really do not see any
musiccomposer cum singer even in the realms of your comparison...i do
not want to even name them to spoil my post..
I hope i will get some responses and insightful comments on this
post...plz do write back..
bye,
anujit
