Houseful bookings add colour to Rang De Basanti
Wednesday, January 25, 2006 11:1:54 ISTControversy over Aamir Khan starrer
propels heavy bookings for tomorrow’s release..
This year’s most awaited film, Aamir Khan starrer Rang De Basanti comes to the
theatres and multiplexes a day early to celebrate India’s Republic Day. Slated
for a release tomorrow, the urban patriotic film is Aamir’s first film in 2006
and his first release after his marriage to Kiran (Rao).
The actor has been in the news since a couple of months with news about his
hush-hush marriage and controversies revolving around the upcoming film. The
media hype and the ‘Aamir Khan’ tag together manages to make Rang De Basanti
shows go house full for the entire weekend. This year has not had a super hit
at the box office yet, so audiences have more expectations from Rang De Basanti.
Cashing on all the hype around this film, multiplexes are charging a premium on
the ticket rates from Thursday to Sunday. “We have the liberty to charge a
certain additional amount for special films screening at the multiplex,” says
Umesh Bhikchandani, General Manager- Inox.
“Rang De Basanti has got a very good response. People are aware that the film
is releasing on Thursday because newspapers and radio stations are announcing
it all the time.” He informs that the weekend shows are almost fully booked.
“It is only the last shows of the first weekend that we have increased the
ticket rates on one slot. The Royal Seats, otherwise going for Rs. 200 are
booked at Rs. 220 for Rang De Basanti.”
Bhumika Tiwari, manager- Cinema Programming at Fun Republic agrees that the
media hype around the movie contributes to the increase in advance bookings.
“The movie’s got a ‘rocking’ start,” she says. “The advance bookings are really
good. The ticket rates are reasonably increased only for the first weekend. But
people don’t seem to mind it.”
Fame Adlabs is also cashing in on the popularity of the film. “It looks like
all the weekend shows will run to a full house. We have increased the number of
shows already. Now Fame will screen 14 shows of Rang De Basanti in a day. For
new movies, especially like this one, we charge a little premium on the ticket
rate. We’ve done that for this weekend but if the movie does extremely well, we
will do the same next weekend,” says Mukesh Gupta, Senior Vice President, Fame.
The film also stars Soha Ali Khan, Kunal Kapoor, Atul Kulkarni and Sharman
Joshi.
