'Lord of the Rings' delays Toronto preview

NEW YORK - Theatergoers curious about the lavish stage version of "The Lord of Rings" will have to wait two days longer for the first public performance in Toronto.
The production will now begin preview performances Saturday at the Princess of Wales Theatre instead of Thursday, producer Kevin Wallace said in a telephone interview from Canada.
"It isn't that there is a problem," Wallace said. "It's just the volume of work. We need an extra 48 hours."
The mammoth show, based on J.R.R. Tolkien's famous trilogy, has been in rehearsal since October, getting ready for a March 23 opening. It has a cast of 55, headed by James Loye as Frodo and Brent Carver as Gandalf the magician, and a large environmental setting.
This "Lord of the Rings," while not a musical, uses music extensively. It has book and lyrics by Shaun McKenna and Matthew Warchus and has music by Bollywood composer A.R. Rahman and Varttina, a Finnish folk group.
