RANG DE BASANTI opens to an exceptional response

It appears that RANG DE BASANTI, has won the hearts of the international
audiences with the film getting a record opening response in the overseas
market. According to Ashoka Holla, Vice President, International Distribution,
UTV, the film has got an exceptional response in the overseas market,
especially in Dubai, Australia and the U.S. “It has grossed a business of a
million dirhams in its first three days run in Dubai, whereas the estimated
opening response in U.S. is $ 700,000 for three days. In Australia it has got
the third biggest opening after SALAAM NAMASTE and VEER-ZAARA. It is
overwhelming by all means,” Holla reveals.
The reason for the extraordinary overseas opening according to him is the
fact that UTV has released the film directly in the overseas through front line
distributors instead of selling the overseas territories of the film. “We
decided to adopt this practice to ward off piracy. It is a policy decision,
which we recently took for territories like Hongkong, Thailand and Netherlands.
That way we are able to monitor each and every print that goes in the overseas
territory. In fact, we are dealing with a chain of front line distributors in
Germany, Poland and France, he says.
Holla has also rubbished rumors that the film has not got a very favorable
response in certain places in the interiors of India, especially in Nizam and
C.I. territories. “This misleading piece of information is being circulated by
some people in the trade who are not connected to the film. The film has
grossed a business of Rs 15 crores all over India in its first three days run
which is an incredible figure. Moreover the film has got an excellent response
at all the multiplexes, where it is running to packed houses,” he says.
