Lord of the Rings hits T.O.

Adelene and Tyana Mohamed are bonded by more than just bloodlines: their intense shared passion for the Lord of the Rings took them to the ends of the Earth to pay a visit to Middle-earth.
The Mississauga, Ont., sisters headed to Queenstown, New Zealand, last September to visit the shooting sites used in the popular film versions of the epic mythical trilogy.
"Our family thinks we're a little weird, but the friends think it's cool — they're almost as bad as us," said Adelene of their Lord of the Rings fixation.
Their journey brought them full circle to Toronto's Princess of Wales of Theatre for the opening night preview of the musical production of the Lord of the Rings.
Hundreds of theatregoers braved a soggy, blustery Saturday night to take in the $27 million, three-hour production based on the books written by J.R.R. Tolkien.
The trilogy also spawned three epic Oscar-winning films.
"I read the books when I was probably like 15,16 and I got really excited about the movies," said Adelene, 27. "As soon as we heard tickets were going on sale (for the musical) we bought (them) the first day."
"I'm honestly just really excited to see how they can turn something that was such a long, huge epic into a three-hour show and see what they can actually put in there and if they can keep true to the main themes and the main heart of the novel."
Add Tyana, 19: "I'm excited how they're going to do the different heights of the different characters and how they put all this fantasy together in real life in front of you."
The long-awaited production hit a snag early last week when producer Kevin Wallace decided to cancel the first two opening-night previews set for Thursday and Friday, saying more time was needed to fine-tune the show. Wallace insisted there are no problems with the production.
Hundreds of Hobbit fans — many of whom planned to come from out of town to Toronto just for the performances — were left disappointed.
However, rainy weather and a two-day delay did to little dissuade or dampen the enthusiasm of anxious ticket-holders, many of whom had snapped up tickets more than seven months ago.
Eric Makarchuk, 11, of Whitby, Ont., loved the action of the films, and says he can't wait to see his favourite characters, the Orcs, come to life on stage.
"They're just different and they're funny and they're cool," he said.
"I'm very curious to see how you turn something like that into a musical," said Paul Higeli, attending the show with fiancee, Angela. "It's just an incredible fantasy. It's got the good, the bad and the ugly in it."
Jessica Unverzart, 15, won tickets to the show at a festival and drove two-and-a-half hours from Clarence, N.Y., just outside Buffalo, with sister Katie, 17, her mother and her aunt to take in the performance.
"I think it's really cool but I'm a little nervous," she said of the novels being adapted for the stage. "I really loved the movies and I just want it to be just as good as it was in the movies, and I'm sure it will be."
