Bombay Dreams
We saw a surprising musical the other night here on
Broadway: Bombay Dreams. Composed by A R Rahman, it is
almost the usual theatrical tale of a young man who
dreams of success in the entertainment field, in this
case Bombay's Bollywood, told in the manner of the
stylized fantasy films which are produced in that
Indian counterpart to Hollywood. The music is, for the
most part, refreshingly exotic, with delicate turns of
melody and much wonderful percussionthere are two
solo percussionists placed on balconies flanking the
stage who play with great gusto.
As one might expect, Akaash (Manu Narayan), the
handsome, talented slum boy, attains his dream of
becoming a star, and bedding the luscious Rani (Ayesha
Dharkera talented comedic actress as well as a Bombay
Bombshell), whom he previously admired as the reigning
film star. He had Rani posters plastering the walls of
the hovel he shared with his grandmother, so this is
quite a successful Is-To-Be. He gets caught up in
his success, following advice from his director to
keep his past secret, but ultimately acts in a just
manner, helping those who helped him. Sadly, his best
friend Sweetie (Sriram Ganesan), one of the Hijira
(eunuchs) is killed by the Brahmin villain Vikram
(Deep Katdare), who demonstrates the reality of the
corruption of Bombay and how he used it for great
personal success. He underestimates the power of a
film god, regardless of his class origin, and so
loses his bid for greater wealth. It is interesting to
note that the hero can only attain what is just with
the aid of money and power he has earned as a star.
However, that achievement required him to temporarily
sever ties with his past. He does not pine to return
to poverty, but must learn how best to wield his new
status. I have left out some major points so as not to
provide complete spoilers for the plot.
Ultimately, the message of the show is delivered by
Grandmother, who states that shed prayed to the gods
for many years and was still wearing the same old
sariso clearly your destiny is in your own hands.
Additionally, since both Akaash and Rani came from the
untouchable class, they prove that artificial caste
systems cannot stifle the talents of those who really
work their own personal magicthe power of the
aristocracy of the able.
With the lush sets, gorgeous Indian costumeswhich
particularly show off the beautiful gals, exotic
choreography, and some stand-out vocal talent (Ian
Jutsuns keening of the Lament for Sweeties funeral
procession was particularly noteworthyhes somebody
to watch), and a dynamite supporting cast who play
many different roles with great aplomb, one would
think this would sell-out regularly. Of course, it
doesnt, so it may not get beyond the New York and
London productions.
If you enjoy musical theatre with superior music and
production values, an exotic twist, and a rather
Satanic moral, then do your best to catch this one
before it is just a dream remembered.
