Because they could compose music with so many limitations and their music is still alive.Among the current crop, Rahman is the only composer who is doing good job.And i feel we must not misread Asha Bhonsle's remarks.For someone who has seen the development of music, right from 1940s...definitely today's music would sound non-qualitative. And how can she single-out Rahman that only he is doing good job..if she does that, other composers would protest..or rather she would be inviting their disrespect. So, her statement is a general opinion.Yet, i can cite so many interviews in which she praised Rahman as being a unique composers among the current lot.Secondly, you find Rahman greater than R.D.Burman because you are living in Rahman's era. Music should be judged by quality and the timelessness associated with them. Tomorrow your kids might not enjoy Rahman..as someone else will be ruling in their era. does that degrade rahman's achievements.Same applies to R.D.Burman also.He was a true genius no doubt.and if you think that his worth can be judged only by remembering 100 films of his work, then you are mistaken. you must not forget that R.D.Burman, like Rahman, was a trendsetter in his own times and even now, so many of his songs are still remembered. Lets give him the credit and respect. judging who is greatest is very abstract. you will show me few songs which only rahman can create..and i can show you some songs which only R.D.Burman could create. how can you evaluate then?it is useless to draw such comparisions and lets give every good/great composer a due place in the history of Indian Film Music.RegardsAakarsh.
