New York: It created a storm while it was being filmed
in India. Five years after its production, it has
begun creating waves in the international film
circuit.
After receiving an overwhelming response since it
opened at the 2005 Toronto Film Festival, Deepa
Mehta's Water has been riding on success.
Having already broken box office records in Canada,
Australia and Spain, Mehta's controversial film Water
will hit American theaters on April 28.
And after a long period of uncertainty about its India
release, the film is finally headed for a theatrical
release in India in mid-May.
"We had been talking to the distributors in the last
3-4 months as to when would we be ready for release.
And it's just been finalized. I think they're looking
at May to open it in India across 90 screens," says
the director, Mehta.
The film was shot secretly in Sri Lanka under the
title Full Moon, after the production faced violent
protests at the original location of Varanasi due to
its subject.
The story deals with the treatment of widows in India
during the early 20th century, and has great
performances from its cast which includes Seema Biwas,
John Abraham, Lisa Ray and 8-year-old Sarala.
The film circle is abuzz with Water being an Oscar
contender. And Mehta could help but gush at the
prospect: "Yeah! There's talk about the Oscars. I
think it's a little early but if it does qualify for
that I'd be ecstatic because there are some
performances in the film that are so mindblowing."
Chances are Water will find a place not just in the
Foreign Film Category at the Academy awards.
If the US distributor, Fox Searchlight, is to be
believed, the film also stands a strong likelihood of
finding a place in the music - composed by AR Rahman
and Mychael Danna - and cinematography category.
