biggest musical rivalry in Tamil cinema
Tamil
cinema music is competitive
as never before.Gone are the
days of MSV-Ilayaraja &
Ilayaraja-A.R.Rahman, where
it was always a 2 way battle
for the top spot.Today ,we see
several composers making forays
into the music charts with their
own syle of music.Tamil music
is also a money spinner because
of the high prices for audio
rights and the craze for Tamil
movie music is at an all time
high with maximum exposure in
music channels and FM radio
services.
So which music director commands
the highest price and who is
the hottest in the music charts?
Lets take a look at the top
four.
4.VIDYASAGAR
Starting
from Dil,Vidyasagar was on a
dream run with a long line of
consecutive hits that included,Dhool,Run,
Anbae Sivam, Thirumalai,Ghilli,
Madhurey,and Ji. He hit the
peak of popularity with Chandramukhi
that topped music charts.
During this period he
composed music for all the
top heroes like
Rajini,Kamal,Vijay,Ajith and
Vikram. However post Chandramukhi,his
run of form has been rather
mediocre at best. His compositions
for Majaa, Paramasivan and Aadhi
had nothing new and were duds
in the audio market. But there
does seem to be a revival on
the cards with Em Mahan, which
succeeded commercially and
the songs were also well
received.His biggest plus is
his soft melodious numbers
that he dishes out with
ease.
Upcoming albums:
Vidyasagars upcoming
albums are K.Balachanders
Poi, Karu.Palaniappans Sivapathigaram.
and Radha Mohans Mozhi. Even
though Pois audio has failed
to attract interest, Vidyasagar
is expected to hit back with Sivapathigaram
(His earlier association with Karu.Palaniappan
in Parthiban Kanavu was a success)
and Mozhi.
3.YUVAN
SHANKAR RAJA
Yuvan
was a revelation right from
his first flick, Aravindan.He
boasts an excellent track record
and his combination with young
directors like Selvaraghavan,
Vishnuvardhan and Simbhu have
been huge successes.He can be
proud of his recent form with
musical hits in Puthupettai
& Vallavan and commercial
hits with Sandaikozhi,Pattiyal
and Thimiru.His pluses are his
fast numbers,haunting melodies
and excellent re-recording.His
minus is his affliction for
remixes which tend to get repetitive.
Upcoming albums:
Yuvan has his hands full
with several albums slated to hit
the marquee in the coming days.These
include Jeyam Ravis Deepavali,
Jeevas Thamizh MA, Dhanushs
Parattai Engira Azhagu Sundaram,
and Vishals Thamirabarani.Yuvans
Paruthiveeran released recently
and his folk songs seem to have
won favour with music buffs.
2.HARRIS
JAYARAJ
Harris
burst into the music scene with
Minnale.He followed it up with
hits like 12B,Leysa Leysa,Kaakha
Kaakha and Chellamae.His recent
form is inimitable with a string
of successes in Ullam Ketkume,
Anniyan, Ghajini, and the most
recent Vettayadu Vilaiyadu.All
these movies were big box
office hits and Harris's
songs topped the music
charts.Harris's combination
with Gowtham Menon has produced
his best numbers.His biggest
plus is his ease with most styles
of music-Classical,Western or
melody.
Upcoming albums:
Harris Jayaraj could do
no wrong in his current form and
his upcoming albums spell success
even before their release.He joins
hands with his pal Gowtham Menon
again for Pachaikili Muthucharam,
followed by Director Jeevas
Unnale Unnale ( the duo clicked
earlier in 12B and Ullam Ketkume
) and Lingusamys Bheema. He
is expected to be the composer
for Gowtham Menons Surya
starrer Udal Porul
Aavi as well.With
such a line up, Harriss flag
is set to fly higher than ever.
1.A.R.Rahman
A.R.Rahman
is no longer confined to the
Tamil music space.He is a big
brand name in Bollywood and
has also ventured into Western
theater with his The
Lord of the Rings
rendition.His recent form is
mediocre by his standards, with
Anbae Aruyire,Sillunnu Oru Kadhal
and Varalaaru.All these albums
had flashes of brilliance but
didnt succeed as expected.But
A.R.R retains his top spot because
his albums generate the kind
of hype and expectation that
is on a league of its own.He
still commands the highest compensation
among composers and his audio
rights still remain the most
expensive.He is the most sought
after music director for top
directors like Shankar, Maniratnam
and K.S.Ravikumar.
Upcoming albums:
Rahman is very choosy about
his projects.He has only 2 upcoming
releases, but both these projects
would make it to the wish list of
any other composer in Kollywood.
He kicks off 2007 with Superstar
Rajinikanths Sivaji, followed
by Vijays Azhagiya Tamizh
Magan. Rahmans combination
with Shankar always creates magic
and with Superstar joining the party,
we can expect nothing
short of fireworks in the
coming year.
