The first time I heard this scintillating soundtrack, it had Rahman
quality and style written all over it. Not to take anything away from
Vishal Bharadwaj, whose musical genius is one of bollywood's best kept
secrets. I heard this soundtrack again and it simply is the finest
soundtrack this year and one of the finest in many years in terms of
precisionship, sound quality, exceptional and finely tuned and
selective arrangements, use of acoustic and ethnic instruments,
layering, melody, and overall texture and sleekness. It is truly a
marvelous gift to quality music lovers. If you have not heard this
soundtrack, you are missing something extremely special. There are so
many signature Rahman elements in this soundtrack.......crisp, clean
sound, ethnic drums and classical instruments, haunting flutes, lots
of bells and whistles with sound and detailed instrumentation (piano,
acoustic guitar), thick layering and arrangements, and orchestral
prowess.
Not surprising at all that Rahman touts this one as his favorite of
the year. I wish Rahman could come out with more such soundtracks
with greater emphasis on acoustics, ethnic instrumentation, and that
crisp, clean, immaculate sound and to get away from "techno muddiness"
which has clogged up the quality of his sound arrangements of late in
some of his soundtracks. Omkara is certainly one of my favs. Vishal
B's talent is extraorindary, like Rahman's.
