Bollywood’s                                              test of
fortunes in 2007 begins this
Friday with the release of Guru. The
much awaited Mani Ratnam film hits
theatres across the country and it
is being closely watched. The film
has been marketed aggressively all
over India and the effect of this
is sure to show in the opening that
the movie gets.

However, the promotion has also generated lots
of expectations and it might be a bit tough
for the movie to live up to them.

The movie is believed to be based on the life
of Dhirubhai Ambani; something vehemently denied
by Mani Ratnam. Abhishek’s performance
in this movie is being touted as the best of
his career. The Abhishek-Aishwarya on screen
and off screen chemistry is sure to generate
extra interest in the movie. Add to this the
music of A.R.Rahman which is topping the charts
and an item number by Mallika Sherawat, one
can’t help feel that the movie has a very
good chance of striking the right note at the
box office. Mani Ratnam’s narratives,
as we have all seen over a long period of time
have always been gripping affairs and it is
not going to be any different this time. Guru
will have free run for the first two weeks.
The last big release Bhaagam Bhag was nearly
four weeks back and is slowly losing steam.
The next big release, Salaam-E-Ishq is scheduled
to hit theatres on Republic day. This means
a 14 day period for Guru to rule the box office.
There couldn’t have been a better time
to release the movie.

In the meantime the movie was screened for some
special guest on Monday’s night at Yashraj
studios. Amitabh-Jaya couple and Aishwarya Rai’s
parents Vrinda and Krishnaraj were also there.
Amitabh was so moved by his son’s performance
that he had tears in his eyes. He came out of
the studio and gave his son a huge hug and lauded
him for his efforts. Abhishek was waiting outside
the theatre opting not to see the screening.
