Hey hey... relax. you don't have to get so hyper about this "Plagiarism" aka "inspiration" thing.
I call myself an ARR fan but definitely not a "rah - maniac" :D and thats how i'm a member of arrahmanfans group. It hurt me when my colleague said ARR "lifts" tunes and rhythm patterns from various sources. But then, I didn't believe him until I saw http://www.itwofs.com/tamil-arr.html. The site lists only 10 songs. But I think we can find lots more if we start comparing zillions of compositions in one raaga to the compositions of ARR. You'll be able to identify some minuscule parchaai of an other composition in any composition for that matter. Unless it is Mr. Pritam, who does a complete "Ctrl-C + Ctrl-V", there is no fun in ridiculing great composers like ARR. Even there, I appreciate Pritam for making an amazing remix of the original that was worth presenting. Do you know any DJ who remixes better?? haah noways. Trust me, its a hell lot difficult making a new tune in a restrictive raaga which has been used/reused/abused by all the composers. It is a challenge for every composer to give a different feel to the same raaga. the constraints will be 1. 8 major notes + 5 minor notes (In one octave) 2. For a song, the composer picks a subset of the above notes. 3. If its a classical raaga, the usage is even more restricted by raaga sanchaara (defined by aaroha and avaroha) 4. Above all this, it should not resemble the composition which is being made by some high school kid strumming his guitar in some remote part of this world who accidentally comes up with the same tune! Heights!!! isn't it? But, its definitely possible. So, take it easy. Don't get all excited when someone says Raja/ARR has "copied". And these composers are surely not in the "Pritam, Anu Malik, ..." league. It doesn't make sense to feel insecure about ARR. He knows his job veeery well. You need not break your head over it, coz, he'll be the first one to know if his tune resembles somebody else's. Let good music flow to satisfy the thirst of all music lovers. - Pavan On 2/10/07, Shiv Kanchi <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:
karthik, you are absolutely right. i will give you an incident to prove that a.r.rehman never copies someones music. in the south indian movie "NEW", actor and director s.j.suryah asked A.R.Rehman to remix the "Thottal Poo Malarum" song with same tune(its a slow classical song from old tamil movie). But rehman strongly denied to do that, even that guy compuled him a lot to do that. but finally rehmand refused. in stead of that, what rehman did for him to satisfy was, he took the lyrics alone from that song. and created the fresh tune for that lyrics and the main thing is, he presented that in melodious tune with fast music. that song become mega mega hit in tamil. its amazing. its possible only for rehman. the legend. one more thing, see, the drum beat may be same for 2-5 seconds because how can one present various variety sounds with single drum. but still rehman doing that. your cousin should appreciate him. it will happen unknowingly by a.r.rehman itself. even rahman will not hear anyother music directors music since he started his career in music. bcos he dont have time man. he have only his own time to create the magical music. thats y hes taking enough(more) time to create music album. if hes copying and doing then he will do 20-50 films per year. whole world knowz this, if your cousin doesnot know this, we will not bother. andrew llyod webber would not called him for bombay dreams if he felt rehman is a copier lord of the rings team would not called him if they felt rehman is a copier rehmans 3 songs will not get nominated for oscars if they felt rehman is a copier my feelings are uncontrolable by hearing the words like this about a.r.rehman. spike lee (director of "inside man" hollywood) and others only copying rehman music. rehman i love you, i love you forever, whoever whatever says about you i love you. you make us pride. i have a son, i am the happiest man in the world if my son will grow like you.
