Top jazz master
guitarist hosts clinic in Barrie
Hailed as one of the most esteemed contemporary
jazz guitarists to emerge from the Canadian music scene, Levon Ichkhanian
brings his wealth of music experience to both his clinics and performances.
Levon comes to Barrie for a master class/concert at Music Pro, on June 13, with
a follow-up performance during the Barrie Jazz and Blues Festival on June 17,
fresh from shows at the Barbados and Trinidad Jazz Festivals.
Levon (as he is best known) recently arrived back in Canada after performing in
A.R. Rahman’s 3D World Tour, which took him to India, Singapore, Dubai and the
United Kingdom, in time to perform in the orchestra for the stage production of
The Lord of the Rings.
Rahman is India’s foremost film music composer, with more than 100 million
albums sold and the composer of stage productions such as Bombay Dreams and The
Lord of the Rings.
A third-generation musician, Levon was a child prodigy performing his first
professional gig at the age of 13. Over the past 30 years, his breadth of
knowledge has spanned over all areas of music – performing, composing,
recording, touring and producing. Levon has published articles in such
magazines as Guitar Player and Canadian Musician, and has also been the subject
of cover features for Muzic Etc., Canadian Musician and most recently Musicpro.
His playing talent stretch to both fretless and fretted electric and acoustic
guitars, oud, bouzouki, banjitar and mandolin.
Levon has three solo CDs on the market: Kick-n Jazz, with Bernard Purdie; After
Hours (which features Paquito D’Rivera and John Patitucci) and Travels
(featuring Alain Caron), all of which have received rave reviews in various
national and international publications.
As a session musician, Levon has played on more than 100 commercial recordings
(including Canadian Idol’s gold-selling CD), and numerous soundtracks for
films, commercials and television.
He has also composed to the Nashville Chamber Orchestra and the Atlantic Jazz
Society, scored soundtracks for the likes of acclaimed filmmaker Atom Egoyan,
produced CDs for other artists, as well as producing concerts and staged
productions.
Levon will soon be returning to the studio to record his next CD, and is
putting the finishing touches to an improvisation method book.
And active clinician, Levon is sought out for his master classes and
artist-in-residence programs, which he has facilitated on the national and
international scenes.
