spoken by none other than arrahman.rahman grew from composing music to ad films
to an composing at the international level."no matter how high we grow we must
not think that to be the result of our talent alone, and we must not forget
that its god who presented us this all" he says.he has recently done an album
pray for me brother which evoked a huge response from all over the world.his
interview excerpts
int:what made you do the album pray for me brother?
arr: i am a kind of person who wants every one to be fine. thats why i wanted
to convey to people to pray for others.music is the language which i know and i
did it.
prayer is one thing which conveys the affection from the heart.to plead god for
the sake of others is a great thing to do.if this would be done in a devotional
way many wouldnt like it.thats why it was composed it like a love number.this
album is my humble attempt to eradicate povertyness and hunger.
int:what is being done by the revenues earned by this album.
arr:we have started A.R.Rahman foundation.every single paisa earned by this
album is being put into that.we would help all the people who dream about
studying and cannot afford it.
int:at one side you have international albums on the other you have south
indian movies .how are you able to work on both the sides.
arr:when we think the house to be ours wont the universe be.as a student i have
a constant urge to learn new things.in the international arena one has to wait
for a long time for an oppurtunity if one would lose it in the first place.i
had to work for almost three years for the lord of the rings and the name and
recognition it brought me filled me with new enthusiasm.but no matter how far i
go my roots would be in south indian cinema.to be on two boats at the same time
is really difficult but i am searching for the pleasure and joy in the
difficulty.the international music is for me. our film music is for my people.
int:now you have reached an international level what would be your next goal?
arr: i and my music together are on a journey.there has been a notable change
occuring in my life every three years.the journey which started from music
albums , tamil movies ,hindi movies, music tours ,stage drama and many other
milestones.now i am working on the shekar kapur directorial "golden age".a
hollywood movie.another important milestone for me.
int:what kind of response do awards evoke in you?
arr:awards are not the ultimate replica of our talent.i dont set goals and work
towards achieving awards.all those are the acknowledgements and honour from
others that we have done our job well.they are small small joys.there is no
more meaning to them in my view.
int:mani rathnam,shankar, amir khan.....how do you feel when many ace directors
and actors praise you?
arr:friendship always happens by itself.i am not of a kind who thinks that its
because we have to work together we must be friendly with them.i like to work
with friends.if success comes our way friendship doubles.its because of the
successes we gave that made us stars. when we join with someone prominent the
expectations to do something increase.at present i am working on amir's
gazini.later a movie with manirathnam sir.the subject has importance to
music.i have full work in my hands.
int:are your children immersed in music?
arr:my eldest daughter kathija is learning hindustani under ghulam mustafa.i
have told only one thing to him." dont teach her music keeping my songs in
mind".i dont want anyones influence to be on her.i might be becoz of that, that
she is not listening to my music at all.my second daughter rahima is always
with her ipod in her hands.she is a great fan of mine.even the first one.if she
smiles listening to my tune then it would be a definet hit.younger daughter
amina is 4 and half years old and has recently given her voice to an
animation character also.
int:do you find time to spend with them(children)
arr:by the time a wake up in the evening children come from school.its then we
talk with each other.i have lost my father at a very early age.the moments i
have spent with my father are still deeply rooted in my heart.its becoz of that
i try to spend as much time as possible with my children.the first thing that i
forget when i am with them is my music. i am a father ,who patiently listens to
what ever the children say.
int:spirituality is now a common seen phenomena in music directors.what could
be the reason?
arr:people say music is the language of god.every heart is an ununderstood
secret.
god opens such hearts with the key of music.when we listen to good music mind
would be filled with joy.although not understood it melts the heart.people
call the persons who know music to be gods friends.but we too are normal
people.in one way instruments only.but the rhythm and music in us is produced
by god.
