This post is more of an analysis and observation than complaint. It's gathered through visiting various forums on the net. Mind you, the music has just released. We can't expect everyone to like what Rahman delivers, no matter how good we think it sounds. Different strokes for different folks.
I am happy that so far, most of the reactions have been positive. I suspect that more will join the musical celebration over time as the songs grow and once the movie releases and the songs are seen picturized (hopefully well done). I have categorized loosely reasons why people are not taking to the music as of now: 1) Coming out of the hype and dealing with expectations. The most common comment I have heard in a negative review has been "I expected more from Rahman". Well, what do you expect? Dil Se Part II? Anyway, can't do much about this. It's the same for every release. 2) The music sounds too modern. I can partly understand and accept this. Some may have expected a more traditional sounding score from that period, but again, who would be the takers in that case? 3) I have also noticed that many from the teenage crowd have not taken well to the soundtrack save a couple of songs (mostly Azeem and Jashne). Some say it sounds boring and slow. Some were even expecting an item song. Today's teens are hooked onto hip hop and catchy rhythms. JA is not catchy or hip hop. JA is deep and royal and melodious and rich. Maybe too classy for some. I have come to accept that there are lots out there who just don't have refined musical taste. Simple. I suspect that the older crowds (20s and up) will be the takers for this one for now. All I know is that this music has been extremely therapeutic for me. One of the most enjoyable and soulful soundtracks I can remember in a long, long time. Classical and soulful is my cup of tea, so there you go! And if you add extraordinary sound and instrumentation, the sky is the limit for me on this soundtrack. And I am grateful for this group for allowing me to express my thoughts and feelings openly!
