Just to add to my mail below:

As far as I know, Mani gives Rahman the story and then they work towards each
song by taking the situation first rather than working the other way. Frankly
for me, this is why the ARR-Mani combo is the top of the pick because for Mani
to extract a gem of a song like Vellai Pookal from Rahman for that given
situation is simply genius!

I think Sampath, that has to do with maniratnam's style of film making. Two
versions of Kannathil muthamittal enhanced the soul of the story. It was vital
that we , the audience understood Amutha's bond with her parents. The songs
underline this girl's affection for her mother and her father even after the
disappointment of finding out that she isn't theirs. It is to show the
emotional bond between the child and her parents and that is a key to the movie
and is directly relevant to the title of the movie too. I am glad he made an
effort to show this bond separately. The scenes that lead to both versions of
the song say so much about it. The movie was about Amutha, who happens to be a
result of the vicious war in Sri Lanka . I can't think of how you can use
vellai pookal in Kannathil Muthamittal otherwise. Any thoughts on that? I don't
think you can have a dance sequence or a sequence of other scenes relating to
peace and harmony for vellai pookal in KM.
The movie required it to be like that. I personally don’t think it would fit
in otherwise.

The problem is reach of the song, that's what I want to highlight... Instead of
keeping two versions of "kannathil muthamittal" song He could have picturised
"vellai pookkal",

In my opinion, Mani did good justice to this song. However, subject
of this movie was so serious, the movie probably did not do too well
as a ManiRatnam movie should do. I have seen this movie many times on
my VCD, but I find many of my Chennai friends are totally at loss
when I name this movie.

If I can read Mani Ratnam's mind, the idea of using the song at the
begining of this movie probably was to show the "calm status of life"
before the "cyclone of war".

I have a ringtone of this song and use this as alarm sound. Getting
up in the morning to this sound is pure bliss........ ..
