OK. not seen translations posted till now, so taking the plungs myself. Here it is. btw, the construction and choice of words is peculiar and is not followed in day-to-day hindi/ urdu, and I didn't catch even the original words correctly, so I am not able to correctly get the concept and thus the translations may be lacking in many aspects. > > mujh pe tuufaa.N uThaaye logo.n ne \-2 people have raised storm on me (my behavior, my actions, my love story...) > muft baiThe\-biThaaye logo.n ne \-2 (storm raised by those) people who were sitting idle and free > kar diyaa apane aane\-jaane ke \-2 my coming and going (to a particular place) > tazakire jaaye\-jaaye logo.n ne was talked about by people who were gone cases > > mujh pe tuufaa.N uThaaye logo.n ne > muft baiThe\-biThaaye logo.n ne > > vasl kii baate.n kab ban aa_ii thii.n the talks about our meeting were all made > dil se dafatar banaaye logo.n ne my heart was made an office (under public scrutiny) by people > baat apanii vahaa.N na jamane diye people didn't let me leave an impression at that place > apane naqsh jamaaye logo.n ne people rather left their own impressions (at that place, on that person) > > mujh pe tuufaa.N uThaaye logo.n ne > muft baiThe\-biThaaye logo.n ne \-2 > > sun ke u.Datii sii apanii chaahat kii \-2 when I heard of rumors about my love > dono.n ke hosh u.Daaye logo.n ne people made my beloved and myself worried > bin kahe raaz haay bin haa.N ne \-2 the secrets that were not spoken > use kyuu.N kar sunaaye logo.n ne why did people tell my beloved > > mujh pe tuufaa.N uThaaye logo.n ne > > kya tamaashaa hai jo naa dekhe the \-2 there was no show that I might not have seen > wo tamaashe dikhaaye logo.n ne even then, people have shown me such shows > kar diyaa momin us sanam ko Kudaa people raised momin's (the poet's) beloved to the level of a god > kyaa kiyaa haay\-haay logo.n ne \-2 Alas, what have people done. > > mujh pe tuufaa.N uThaaye logo.n ne > muft baiThe\-biThaaye logo.n ne > mujh pe tuufaa.N uThaaye logo.n ne > > mujh pe tufaan uThaaye logo.n ne \-2 > The ghazal has serious thoughts but the construction of the ashaars give an impression of it being humor (mazahia ghazal). Some poets were masters of such an art. Daag Dehalvi: hosh-o-havaas, taab-o-tuwaan 'Daag' ja chuke ab ham bhi jaane waale hain saamaan to gaya Meer Taqi Meer Ishq ek 'Meer' bhaari patthar hai kab is natuwaan se uthta hai Mirza Ghalib hairaan hoon dil ko roouun ki peetoon jigar ko main maqdoor hoon to saath rakhoon nauhagar ko main (name not known) Mariz-e-muhabbat unhi ka fasaana sunaata rahaa dam nkaltey nikaltey. magr zikr-e-sham alam jab k aia chiragh-e-sahar bujh gaia jaltey jaltey. The point is, such type of serious-thoughts-wrapped-in-light-humor are very popular among are respected by language-knowers, but common people get only the outer humor and do not reach to the serious meaning hidden in the depths of such ghazals, thus most common people take the ghazal lightly, in the same vain as a joke. They listen to it, smile and laugh, and then forget it. And if you see, most of the ghazals in Tehzeeb were of such uncommon constructions, not prevalent in urdu ghazals, hard on ears and mind, and that could be one reason why Tehzeeb's music didn't become popular. I think that the selection was ghazal lyrics was not done by ARR. I think these were choosen by Khalid Mohammad. The surface humor of these ghazal lyrics appeared absolutely out of place in the outright serious mood of the film and people could not accept it, and ARR's first attempt at composing the ghazals found no takers. -- Rawat
