Very true Mahima,
Actually, the song Varaga Nadhikarai from sangamam has the same pattern as a
divine folk sufi Punjabi song "Dama Dum Mast Kalandar"...and dat folk song is
composed in raaga yemen...
This sufi song is very close to arr's heart..as he even said bout it in his
interview wid simi garewal few years ago!!!and he even hummed few lines of this
song!!
Arr has produced such a great gem wid Varaga Nadhikarai...its composition has a
divine love for God the same sufi madness!!!
its my all time favourite!!And shankar mahadevan has done full justice to the
mood of it!!!

~love music love life

I got to listen to the songs of Sangamam after seeing the thread here. I think
its a great musical movie. A movie which has lovely folk songs with  very racy
beats. Its a lovely blend of classical music and folk music. Songs like
'Margazhi  Thingal which starts off with the famous Thirupavai has been sung
beautifully to the raga of Sindhu Bhairavi. The transcendtal strumming of the
tanpoora transfers one to an ethereal world. the song that impressed me most
was 'Sowkiamma'  sung by nityashri and this song shows one the nuances of the
raga ' Maand'. Though I am not competent enough to comment on this, I think
Maand is a hindustani raag and finds its place in carnatic music too as does
the raga 'Desh'. ARR has shown his prowess in the field of carnatic classical
music and am sure this one song is enough to make his critics  eat a humble
pie. The other song Varahanadhi Karai I think is using the raga Yemen Kalyani
as its base though its a mix of
folk music.  But then again ARR has done it again bringing in  fine blend of
folk music and classical music.
All in all its a great album I think.

Cheers

Mahiya

Sangamam - This album by Rahman is one of my most fav.tamil
albums....Infact I would place it right at top as my all time favourite. Not
many people seem to be talking about this album. This is an absolutely a
delightful album by our Boss.       Rahman makes an excellent effort to produce
South Indian Classical music and what a effect. Each and every song is amazing.
Those who are well aware of raagas, would be able to describe the genius of
Rahman in this album.     MSV is amazing in aalalakanda , Shankar Mahadevan is
mind blowing in Varaaga Nadhi Karai Oram….Mazhi Thuli,Maargazhi Thingal,Mudhal
Murai…These songs will even melt a stone…     I am surprised that some of our
Rahmaniacs(those who listen to only selected tamil works) don’t know about this
album. Listen to this. This is a stunning effort from Rahman.     It was
released at time when Rahman was at peak of his career and people were
criticizing Rahman that he cant do
classical music. Then came Sangamam , as usual, Rahman let his work do all the
talking.     This album is an absolute masterpiece. A album I would cherish for
the rest of life. Just cant get over this album..Its amazing.     I
can just thank Rahman for filling our lives with happiness and joys with his
music. Thank You Sir !!!
