Madhumita. (TOI Photo)
As we enter her apartment, we see her little daughter Ira cycling near the
stairs. She wants her picture taken too and comes and sits on mama's lap!
You can already see signs of Madhumita's multitasking lifestyle.

The song Maha Maha (Mantra, shot on Charmme) that has paved the way for her
into Tollywood recording studios may be a foot-tapping western number, but
it's Hindustani Classical that Madhumita grew up learning, along with
sisters, Pratichee of the Viva fame, and Sona, a singer who's worked with
international band INXS.

So, how come the decision to sing professionally came so late for her? "It
was never a conscious professional decision. Growing up, I enjoyed singing
at the drop of a hat. But I was busy with my career, while music was for
enjoyment," says the MBA gold medallist who now works with Satyam Computers
in the city. About her first playback experience, she says, "Touch
wood...I've been fortunate. When I recorded Maha Maha, I wasn't even sure my
voice would be retained. I'm pleasantly surprised the song has become such a
hit, with drivers, tailors, everyone playing it!"

She's also recorded the song in Tamil and Malayalam. She admits she was
aware of the controversy around the song, yet heaps praise on the upcoming
music director Anand. "He's shown faith in me as a newcomer, which is a big
thing for a new music director," she says.

What are her expectations of winning the forthcoming Filmfare (July 12th)?
She admits frankly, "Just the nomination, against names like Chitra and
Shreya Ghoshal, means a hell of a lot. I think it'd be anybody's dream!"

Take her back to her growing up days and she says, "Pratichee's the youngest
and Sona a year younger to me. We had a whale of a time growing up, and
fought a lot...we still do!" she says, adding, "Despite father being in the
navy and us moving around, we were always tutored in music." About
Pratichee, she also says, "Tina (Pratichee) deserves all the fame she's
got." It was during one of Pratichee's recordings, Madhumita tells us, that
she met AR Rahman. "I'd mentioned I sing and he actually said he wanted to
hear me! I couldn't believe I'd heard him right, but did sing impromptu!"

Lastly, how does she manage time for music? "It's not impossible. Someone
who says you can't do something you enjoy due to lack of time is basically
lazy! I manage to sing, even with a daughter, house, job and gym routines,"
signs off the multi-tasker.
