become emotional the moment we hear patriotic songs. Metrolife lists out
some of the old and new songs that have captured the imagination of the
nation

Remember the days when we would wait to see the special Chitrahaar on
Independence Day? How about the Sunday prior to August 15 when Doordarshan
would telecast Rangoli full of soul-stirring patriotic songs? A nostalgic
trip down memory lane isn't it? Metrolife joins you in this journey and
lists down a series of patriotic songs that not only changed the face of
music, but of the country as well.

Be it Mohammad Rafi singing Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyon in his golden
voice or Lata Mangeshkar moving Pandit Nehru to tears with her beautiful
rendition of Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon or a little child singing Sabarmati Ke
Sant, patriotic songs are ingrained in our minds since birth. Who can forget
the sepia visuals of a young soldier singing Nanha Munha Rahi Hoon or
yesteryear's superstar Manoj Kumar inspiring a whole new generation of
patriots with Mere Desh Ki Dharti? Think of patriotic songs and Aye Watan
Aye Watan and Ae Mere Pyaare Watan sung to perfection by Rafi and Manna De
respectively, cannot escape one's mind. Do you remember secretly humming
these tunes as you watched the flag hoisting ceremony in your school?

Coming to the generations X and Y, one has to admit that there have been
wonderful compositions on patriotism in the last few years. A R Rahman's
Vande Mataram has become an anthem of the younger generation. Film Roza in
which he composed music too had a patriotic song. Not to forget his
compositions for new-age patriotic movies like Swades, Lagaan and Rang De
Basanti. The melodious sarangi-filled Ye Jo Desh Hai Tera from Swades or the
blood-curdling Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna from Rang De are enough to wake an
entire generation. The recent addition to this list is SRK urging the youth
to work towards their goals in Chak De India.

 Have
these songs urged you to watch these movies on Independence Day? Well, it's
not a bad idea at all!
