Toronto Oscar Watch: 'Slumdog' Slamdunk? I like Danny Boyle's "Slumdog Millionaire'' a lot but I think Fox Searchlight -- which just made a deal last week with Warner Bros. to distribute in lieu of the defunct Warner Independent -- has its work cut out if predictions by the likes of veteran handicappers like Tom O'Neill and Jeffrey Wells that "Slumdog'' is going to get a Best Picture nomination are going to come true. This true feel-good story about an urchin who wins millions of rupees on the Indian version of "Who Wants to Be A Millionaire'' will surely get a nod for the superb screenplay by Simon Purefoy "The Full Monty,'' but Bollywood-flavored movies are still an acquired taste for the Academy, much less for the American public. Searchlight had only limited box office success with Mira Nair's "The Namesake'' which had a wonderful title performance by Kal "Kumar'' Penn and netted no Oscar nominations.
