*In the grand scheme of things,* where would Lata Mangeshkar's birth rank in
importance when one is talking about the highs of the 20th century, like
man's walk on the moon and demolition of the Berlin Wall?

The singer is at least two decades past her best, but every young composer
in Bollywood still dies to record her voice; it's almost as if they
desperately want to fill that one hole in their resume. Among modern
composers, A R Rahman has perhaps used her most intelligently - "Jiya Jale"
in 'Dil Se', "O Paalanhaare" in 'Lagaan' and "So Gaye Hain" in 'Zubeidaa'
and "Luka Chuppi" in 'Rang De Basanti' are great examples of compositions
tailored to suit a voice that has clearly changed over time.
