Well justifying art including music is like justifying religion.
everybody has a taste & acceptance and they just go with it.
If everybody likes melody & classics we would never have heard Rap,
hip hop....
Music in movies is quiet different and has to cater larger audiences
than any. I wouldn't be quoted wrong if I claim Cinema music has
experimented, evolved and revolutionized than any other form in
recent times. Technology has always taken an upbeat. An album for a
particular cinema should essentially contain melody, masala, magic. A
music director and the director of the movie has to work so much
thinking what will sell than thinking of tunes. Ex like Sandeep
Chowta & Himesh who give good tracks which sells very fast. But how
many do remember there was Sandeep Chowta, Viju Shah.. and Himesh
will soon be joining him followed by VS, Pritam and many more.
India being a land of various culture every person has his own
likings & dis-likings. A music director has to keep in mind of all
these. There are so many colors but this is actually a constraint.
Having too many items in a meal is a constraint in its own.
OK lets come back to AR & his recent works.
Let me highlight AR for what he is now
The most celebrated music personality both in India and world over.
High expectation.
Revolutionized music in India and when the rest of the world listened
to him they were taken by surprise.
Probably in recent times the only MD who experiments so much, there
is a reason.
AR as a person is racing with time, if there is something he wants
now its time and his space. But we fans don't allow him, we wish
there is AR's album countering every hit song by any other MD. This
is a feeling in every fan I have met, if somebody thinks he is not
like that, perhaps he should sometimes question himself.
Every director needs him. Earlier directors like MR, Shankar and few
more approached him with promising projects. His commitment has
increased. Though MR brings out a movie once in 3 yrs AR now has
friends like MR which keeps him tied. The list is growing and
literally all these together are producing movies every year. So
there was time when AR had only 1 or 2 or 3 worthy projects in a
year. now it has multiplied. 2008 alone has more than 6 releases by
AR. Airtel wants him, Election commission wants him.. who don't?

Now come to his listeners there is a clear division among his fans
those who liked vintage AR and the one who love his recent. Very few
actually like AR to what ever he was and what ever he is now
appreciating his efforts. Can AR compel his directors saying he has
to compose for these 3 set of people????
His troop members have changed we are missing Sivamani, Navin, Keith,
so has the ideas. But wait they also became great working with AR.
Hold your breath for a while Neil, Kiran have just begun.. they will
shine soon provided they have the same commitment as like their
predecessors.
I have never felt AR has changed because change is permanent. he had
changed the music in Indian cinema. Its just our liking and
expectation that has to change with changing times.

I am very happy with Ghajini and I had long ago told few of my
friends when Yuvvraj was released that there will be more energy in
Ghajini.

having said so much I would also like to say I am missing the very
unique percussions which AR introduced to the world. Now other MDs
like Salim-Suleiman, few in Kannada are doing it. While I say unique
percussion my expectations are those changing rhythms and beats and
small intrigue drum loops (Rangeela & Taal had this in plenty).

Sorry for the lengthy mail.

Enjoy Ghajini its the best, but the best comes as usual from AR which
is the main issue to judge.
