Hope i can explain a bit what i mean here when i say abt LAYERS.

For example, lets take yuvvraaj - dil ka Rishta - At 2:26 u can
notice these things
1)male voice singing - passion/aggression/....
2)male backing vocal singing - alaap/jathi (whatever u want to call) -
thom thom thom....bit
3) background beat - violin/cello(dont know the exact instrument name)
4) background beat - pads/drums...
5) and @ 2:50 - female vocals joins the band signing - O oooooooooo

thats atleast 5 layers that i can see..and there are more hidden layers...

Lets now take
Guzzaarish: @ 1:00
1) male vocal singing - hey guzzaarish
2) background beat - pad/drum/electronic loop whatever

cant figure out any other layers...

even there are no vocals:
1)background beat is same
2)front end - humming/some different beat/instrument like
violin/cello..dont know the name...

hope i can explain to some extent...

thanks
sundar.
