Yo Guyz! Don't get me wrong on seeing the title. I just came with an
idea of writing this article after listening to the hindi version of
Ghajini songs composed by AR Rahman. It's a known fact, Harris
Jayaraj has composed beautiful numbers for the tamil version, which
were block-busters in the year 2005.
Few days back Audio of Ghajini(Hindi Version) has been released. It's
the first time, AR Rahman is composing music for a film, which has
Harris Jayaraj's composition for the original version. So the
expectations were sky high.
Has the maestro lived upto the expectation?

Let us start the comparison now and then discuss about the verdict.

1) Suttrum Vizhi song from the tamil version were topping the music
charts for more than 90 days in the year 2005. The song was rendered
by Sriram Parthasarathy and Bombay Jayashree. The song was not an
instant hit. But after the movie release, it became the anthem of youths.
Rating: 4/5

Guzarish seems to be the Suttrum Vizhi in hindi version. The song
starts with the vocals by Sonu Nigam, followed by the haunting voice
of Javed Ali. The song is very simple in terms of layers and
orchestration compared to earlier compositions of AR Rahman. But
still the song has its own class to appeal the listeners. The song
might sound average on first listen, but gradually on repeated
listening, its sure to stay in hearts. This is sure to be one of the
top ten of 2008.
Rating: 3.8/5

If we compare Guzarish with the original version, Guzarish is equally
good as the tamil version.
2) Oru Maalai crooned by Karthick in the tamil version was another
block buster. A stylish number by Harris Jayaraj.
Rating: 4.5/5

Bekha seems to be the Oru Maalai in hindi version. One can feel the
spark in the opening of the song itself. This is very unique and
stylish composition by AR Rahman. Karthik has done justice in voice
modulation making the song perfect. This is a peppy number with Jazz
& Heavy Metals used after a long hiatus. Only AR Rahman can create
such magic and no one can compose such numbers. Hats-off to Rahman!
If presented well on screen, this is gonna top the charts for at least
a year.
Rating: 5/5

I think its not required to compare bekha with the tamil version.
Because tamil version was also a stylish number but of a different
genre. Both the songs rock. If presented well, Bekha might overtake
Oru Maali in terms of score.

3) X Machi was an item number in the tamil version. Nakul and
Mathangi's combination worked well in terms of voice and technically
nothing much to say about the song. It's just an average number.
Rating: 2/5

Aye Bachchu has to be the item number in the hindi version. Rahman has
again come up with a stylish number. One can feel his style in the
way, he has fused the instruments. This is another song with Heavy
Metals and Jazz. Sexy voice of Suzanne D'Mello makes the song more
beautiful. If you don't like party kinda numbers, then this is not
for you. If you like some Jazzy numbers, sure you would enjoy this
song. Excellent orchestration by Rahman saab. Though its an item
number, Rahman has done justice for this song.
Rating: 3/5

On comparison, sure hindi version is far better than the tamil.

4) Rahatulla by Anupama is the opening song of the movie screened as
an introduction number for Asin in the tamil version. In terms of
music, Harris has done a neat job. It was just an average number in
the tamil version.
Rating: 2.5/5

Latoo by Shreya Ghoshal is the hindi version of Rahatulla. Again this
is equally good as the tamil number. But in terms of music, Rahman
has done a marvellous job and its definitely better than tamil
version. Especially the english lyric "Zimbabwe" and "Head is
Spinning" are awesome. You should not miss out the percussion layers
playing behind the english lyric. Rahman has again proved he is a
technowizard. 3 cheers to Rahman.
Rating: 3/5

Hindi version overtakes the tamil version on comparison. It goes
without doubt.

5) Rangola by Shankar Mahadevan and Sujatha in tamil version was just
a passable song. Nothing to rave about this number. It's run on the
mill kinda number.
Rating: 2.5/5

Kaise Muhje by Benny Dayal & Shreya Ghosal in the hindi version cannot
be compared to the original version. This is entirely different and
suppose to be a soulful number again by Benny after Tu Meri Dost from
Yuvvraaj. Rahman again proves he is the king of melodies. This is
gonna be one of the best melodies of 2008.
Though both the songs cannot be compared, its a must to say Kaise
Muhje is the hot cake if compared with the tamil version.

Well! now we have seen comparison of songs from both the versions.
Over all, i feel both the versions have its own style and cannot be
compared with each other.

3 years back, people's expectation were something different and now it
changes. In both the versions, music directors have done justice to
their job.

Tamil Ghajini were blockbuster back 3 years and now Hindi Ghajini is
to rule.

Though there are some negative feedbacks in both the versions, both
are good and pleasant for our ears.

My rating for Tamil Ghajini would be 3.5/5. Because, only two numbers
Suttrum Vizhi and Oru Maalai were excellent compared to other numbers.

My rating for Hindi Ghajini would be 4/5. Because, here we have three
fantabulous numbers Guzarish, Bekha and Kaise Muhje and the other two
are also good.

Alright! now letz start with the comparison of Music Directors.

It can be recalled that, tamil film Kadhalukku Mariyadhai was remade
in Hindi some 8 years back. The tamil version had music by Illayaraja
and songs were extremely good. The hindi version(Doli Saja Ke Rakhna)
was composed by AR Rahman and the songs were like electric spark.
Rahman has given the best of best and all the songs were super hit
compared to the tamil version.

Rahman has worked with Illayaraja in his earlier days and he has
composed few songs better than Illayaraja. For instance i can quote
"Doli Saja Ke Rakhna".

Now tamil film Ghajini is been remade in Hindi. Harris Jayaraj has
composed excellent numbers for the Tamil version and so Rahman for the
Hindi version.

On comparing both the composers album, honestly speaking both are
equally good. One cannot say Harris has dominated Rahman nor Rahman
has dominated Harris.

But overall when we compare the music albums of both the composers for
the past 8 years. Harris has scored better than AR Rahman in few
albums. For instance i can quote: Unnalae Unnalae, Dhaam Dhoom, Lesa
Lesa, Minnalae and recent Vaaranam Aayiram. (Though few numbers of
Harris Jayaraj are inspired from english albums, at the end of the day
songs are massive hit. No matter where he gets inspired from, all we
want only enjoyable tunes. Harris does give enjoyable tunes.)

Its a known fact that Harris Jayaraj had worked with AR Rahman before
turning as a music composer.

On seeing the above examples, AR Rahman, student of Illayaraja has
composed few numbers better than Illayaraja. So is it wise to say AR
Rahman dominates Illayaraja? No its senseless. No one can overtake
Illayaraja. He was his best during his period of music. Now for this
generation AR Rahman is doing a good job. It's wise to say Illayaraja
was a trend setter until late 80s and then it's AR Rahman.

Similarly, Harris was a student of AR Rahman and though he composes
better numbers than Rahman sometimes, AR Rahman still rules. Harris
cannot overtake AR Rahman at present. Might be after few years, when
AR Rahman retires from music industry Harris can be another trendsetter.

Finally i would conclude by saying, Illayaraja and AR Rahman are
trendsetters and Harris Jayaraj is on the way to be a trendsetter if
he always remains in the good books of people.
