NOW SHOWING YUVVRAAJ (Hindi) Directed by Subhash Ghai Starring Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Anil Kapoor, Sayed Khan, Boman Irani, Mithun Chakraborty, Aushima Sawhney
A RICH man with three estranged sons dies, leaving his fortune to the one who is autistic (Anil Kapoor). The other two (Salman Khan and Sayed Khan) want their share for different reasons: the former to marry a rich man's daughter (Katrina), and the latter to continue living it up womanising and gambling. How the three brothers get together in the end forms the basis of the story. For a man with hits such as Pardes, Yaadein and Taal, 1980s/1990s showman Subhash Ghai is surprisingly unable to hold the audience's attention. Even the songs composed by award-winning A.R. Rahman fail to ignite passion. There seem to be too many which bog down the movie further. Is Subhash losing his touch? Viewers don't feel any attachment to Salman or even Anil, who plays his role as an autistic convincingly. Is it because there are no scenes of the father bonding with his children? The brothers' get-together seems contrived and hurried. What hold viewers' attention are the wonderful scenes in Prague and London. Salman and Katrina are an item in real life — another attraction of this movie. Salman even sheds a tear or two, something of a rarity. When he flies into a rage and smashes up things, you can guess at how tumultuous his love affair would have been with Aishwarya Rai (now married to Abishek Bachchan). Look out for talented Boman Irani. He had a meaty role as a gay in the hit movie Dostana and appears here as Katrina's eccentric doctor father. Go see this movie only if you are a Salman Khan or Katrina fan... or if you love A.R. Rahman's songs. http://www.nst.com.my/Current_News/NST/Friday/Features/20081204161405/Article/indexF_html -- regards, Vithur
