This is one issue that led me to have an arguement with someone I know of older generation. It is actually a very sensitive talk because at times the notes can be coincidental.
Take the film Vaada. That song by Himesh Reshammiya where Amisha Patel is featured in a black saree, perhaps called "Maula" and perhaps the first song in the movie is an utter replication of what Rahman offered in Tazheeb as "Sabak Aisa". Take that song from Krish..."Dil na liya" and you'd know what a blunder Rajesh Roshan committed as he tried to make it sound like Pukar's "Key Sera Sera". It was a disgusting sound. I don't see a single song that's been conscientious replication by Rahman. Whenever he did draw inspiration he also made it explicit. One example is Ringa Ringa akin to Choli ke Peeche song. And if someone still wanted to call him a copycat, then the rest of the composers are even bigger species of the copycat galore. In fact the rest of the music directors have copied ARR many a times. So much so that "I draw inspiration" kinda talk has become a fashionable defense for them. Unfortunately a majority of those unintelligent audiences do not realise who's copied, who hasn't from whom. At the end of the day ARR still stands out.
