Best Original Score - Motion Picture

The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button Composed by Alexandre Desplat - Damien
Bona, Scott Feinberg

Changeling Composed by Clint Eastwood

Defiance Composed by James Newton Howard

Slumdog Millionaire Composed by A. R. Rahman, - Nathaniel Rogers, Scott
Feinberg, Sasha Stone

Frost/Nixon Composed by Hans Zimmer
Score doesn’t seem to have a lot of Oscar crossover so if you think
Slumdog is going to win the Oscar, you might want to go for something
else.

Golden Globes Predictions

In all of these many years, the Golden Globes have eked out their
own place in the awards race, even if their influence on Oscar is much
less now than it ever has been.  The date change and the plethora of
blogs (cough cough) have changed the way people consider the Oscar
race.  Therefore, the Globes and Oscar have seen a disconnect.  But the
great thing that seems to have come out of that is the Globes are their
own show.  They are the only film awards show that draws an
international audience and drums up excitement where there is barely
any to be had.
The Globes are known as the Oscar’s uninhibited drunken cousin,
willing to go places the Oscar would never go.  That doesn’t
necessarily make their choices any braver but it makes for a very
entertaining telecast.  Believe it or not, there was a time not too
many decades ago when no A-listers would show up at the telecast.  It’s
hard to imagine it because now, everyone shows up.
Gold Derby has assembled a list of predictions
but we’ll have our own list and we’ll be adding to it as the weekend
wears on.  Let’s get down to it, shall we?  Many of you have already
entered our predictions contest and our preferences ballot but let’s go through
them, one by one.
Best Motion Picture - Drama

The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button

Frost/Nixon

The Reader

Revolutionary Road

Slumdog Millionaire - Damien Bona - Inside Oscar, Nathaniel Rogers - The Film
Experience, Scott Feinberg - The Envelope, Sasha Stone (AD), Clarence Turak (AD)

If any of these films took a great leap forward out of this race at
the Globes it would have had some impact if there was more of a time
lag between Sunday and Monday.  Since Oscar ballots are due Monday,
it’s impossible for the Globes’ surprise wins to really have any
influence on how the nominations go.  It could still impact who wins.
But there is no reason to think that the international Slumdog won’t be
honored by the international HFPA, except that they tend to like very
heavy, brooding dramas.  Dave Karger has predicted this to win on
Sunday and I see why he’s arrived at that conclusion.  And if it
happened it could shakes things up a bit.  But there just isn’t time
for any sort of major rallying to go down.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama

Anne Hathaway – Rachel Getting Married, Damien Bona, Nathaniel Rogers, Scott
Feinberg, Angelina Jolie – Changeling

Meryl Streep – Doubt

Kristin Scott Thomas – I’ve Loved You So Long

Kate Winslet – Revolutionary Road, Sasha Stone
I’m banking on Kate winning this but she could also win for The
Reader.  These are all good performances but Winslet’s is beyond
anything she’s done before and this could be her year.  If she doesn’t
win here it certainly doesn’t mean the Oscar is out.  Like Streep,
she’s in two categories, which makes it easier to divide up these
wins.  Streep for comedy, Winslet for drama (or supporting).
Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama

Leonardo DiCaprio – Revolutionary Road

Frank Langella – Frost/Nixon

Sean Penn – Milk, Nathaniel Rogers, Scott Feinberg

Brad Pitt – The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button

Mickey Rourke – The Wrestler - Damien Bona, Sasha Stone
Sean Penn seems to be on a roll and there is no reason to not
predict him.  He’s the bankable choice right now.  I have a feeling
that Mickey Rourke may still be in line for this award and maybe the
buzz will start here.  Either way, it’s a win/win - in fact, if any of
them win, it’s a win-win.  Pitt might even win.
Best Motion Picture - Musical Or Comedy

Burn After Reading

Happy-Go-Lucky

In Bruges, Sasha Stone

Mamma Mia! - Damien Bona

Vicky Cristina Barcelona - Nathaniel Rogers, Scott Feinberg
My choice for In Bruges is just because they seemed to really like
it - it popped up in many categories and I doubt it will go away
empty-handed - but then again, Woody Allen and that gorgeous cast and
his wonderful movie - it could go any which way.  Mamma Mia! could even
win.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy

Rebecca Hall – Vicky Cristina Barcelona

Sally Hawkins – Happy-Go-Lucky - Damien Bona

Frances McDormand – Burn After Reading

Meryl Streep – Mamma Mia!, Nathaniel Rogers, Scott Feinberg, Sasha Stone

Emma Thompson – Last Chance Harvey
I’m betting on Streep because she won’t win in drama — if she
doesn’t win here it could be an indication she’s headed for the drama
category win.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical Or Comedy

Javier Bardem – Vicky Cristina Barcelona - Nathaniel Rogers

Colin Farrell – In Bruges

James Franco – Pineapple Express

Brendan Gleeson – In Bruges

Dustin Hoffman – Last Chance Harvey - Damien Bona, Scott Feinberg, Sasha Stone
I really have no clue as to how this will go but I’m going to bet
that Hoffman will take it because of his veteran status.  Bardem would
be next in line for me.
Best Performance by an Actress In A Supporting Role in a Motion Picture

Amy Adams – Doubt

Penélope Cruz – Vicky Cristina Barcelona - Damien Bona, Nathaniel Rogers, Scott
Feinberg, Sasha Stone

Viola Davis – Doubt

Marisa Tomei – The Wrestler

Kate Winslet – The Reader
This is another tough call. Something tells me Kate Winslet will win
this but I think she’s going to win for Revolutionary Road — we’ll find
out early, though, whether she’ll win that.  I really think any of them
could win.  Marisa Tomei could win.
Best Performance by an Actor In A Supporting Role in a Motion Picture

Tom Cruise – Tropic Thunder

Robert Downey Jr. – Tropic Thunder

Ralph Fiennes – The Duchess

Philip Seymour Hoffman – Doubt

Heath Ledger – The Dark Knight - Damien Bona, Nathaniel Rogers, Scott Feinberg,
Sasha Stone
Heath has become too big to ignore this year.
Best Animated Feature Film

Bolt

Kung Fu Panda

Wall-E - - Damien Bona, Nathaniel Rogers, Scott Feinberg, Sasha Stone
The easiest call of the night.
Best Foreign Language Film

The Baader Meinhof Complex (Germany)

Everlasting Moments (Sweden, Denmark)

Gomorrah (Italy) - Damien Bona, Scott Feinberg

I’ve Loved You So Long (France)

Waltz With Bashir (Israel) - Nathaniel Rogers, Sasha Stone
This is a tough one - all of these are good.  The foreign film race doesn’t
seem to have much to do with Oscar, though.
Best Director - Motion Picture

Danny Boyle – Slumdog Millionaire- - Nathaniel Rogers, Scott Feinberg, Sasha
Stone

Stephen Daldry – The Reader

David Fincher – The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, Damien Bona

Ron Howard – Frost/Nixon

Sam Mendes – Revolutionary Road
If it isn’t the delightful Danny Boyle, it could be David Fincher -
but I believe that Slumdog will mostly sweep these awards so Boyle is
the one.  Not only that, the guy took a camera into the streets of
Mumbai and filmed a masterpiece without using extras and big sets.
Slumdog proves that story conquers all.
Best Screenplay - Motion Picture

The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, Written by Eric Roth

Doubt, Written by John Patrick Shanley

Frost/Nixon, Written by Peter Morgan

The Reader, Written by David Hare

Slumdog Millionaire, Written by Simon Beaufoy, - Damien Bona, Nathaniel Rogers,
Scott Feinberg, Sasha Stone
Yeah, again, these are all great scripts.  Slumdog has the edge.
Best Original Score - Motion Picture

The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button Composed by Alexandre Desplat - Damien
Bona, Scott Feinberg

Changeling Composed by Clint Eastwood

Defiance Composed by James Newton Howard

Slumdog Millionaire Composed by A. R. Rahman, - Nathaniel Rogers, Scott
Feinberg, Sasha Stone

Frost/Nixon Composed by Hans Zimmer
Score doesn’t seem to have a lot of Oscar crossover so if you think
Slumdog is going to win the Oscar, you might want to go for something
else.
Best Original Song - Motion Picture

“Down To Earth”

“Gran Torino”

“I Thought I Lost You”

“Once In A Lifetime” - Damien Bona

“The Wrestler” - - Nathaniel Rogers, Scott Feinberg, Sasha Stone
