Director Murugadoss in Rahmania
Q :- Directing a movie for a star like Aamir Khan would have been a dream come true for you. How was the experience ? ARM :- The General opinion in North India is that the films from South are always of commercial interests, and they were all having doubts as to how a small boy would direct a Hindi movie ( which he hasn't done before ) . They were believeing that Aamir khan had done a big mistake. Slowly, when they started seeing the stills with the bald Aamir Khan, they started building up faith. After that the audio released, and the songs became a hit. Both of these started giving a positive vibration to the movie. The Initial Trailer wasn't liked much, but after seeing the subsequent trailors, a lot of expectations came for the audience. Q :- You would have worked with about all Music Directors. How was it working with Rahman ? ARM :- When I was in Assistant Director itself, I have got the chance to go near Rahman Sir's studio, but not enter inside. Assistant Directors were allowed inside his house, till the lawn, but not inside. ( Raihanna interrupts and says, she has seen so many Assistant directors inside his studio, and says Murugadoss is a very shy type person ) . Its not that we are not allowed to go inside, but the Director himself was new to Rahman Sir, and he himself had apprehensions at that time. That was for the movie Ratchagan. I was the last Assistant to him, and as he needed someone to be with him for the recording the whole night, he just told me to stay there in the lawns. So, I had to see him from a distance, and would feel like seeing a Hero. ( Raihanna says that Murugadoss is the first person to talk like that, as most of the Directors who had worked and come there, have had the experience of talking with him, and interacting with him in ease.) Actually, in the lawns at that time, we can see Subhash Ghai in one direction, Ram Gopal Verma sitting in another corner. Mani Sir would come and go, Shankar sir will come and go etc . It would be like a traffic jam for Big Directors, and it would be safe for people like us to stand in a corner safely. As Pravinkanth Himself was new at that moment, he had the fear to take us along with him. So, we could realize the real Rahman, only when we start working with him. Q :- Did you feel the difference between the music of Tamil Ghajini and Hindi Ghajini ( The Hindi one was more commercialized ) ? ARM :- Music keeps changing, and it was after a period of 3 years, that the movie was done in Hindi. It was Rahman Sir, who introduced the concept of getting a human voice in the Re- recording. He asked us, if he can use the pattern of getting human voice in the BGM, and then fill it with music ( as it was a little old pattern ) . I suggested that as the Hero is a physicic, some part of human voice would be good, and also Hindi Audience would like it that way.( Raihanna says Actually, it has been quite some days, when Rahman has been using human voices in the BGM, and its good that you told us this ) I like all the songs in Ghajini. Guzarish , Kaise Mujhe and Bekha. All the audiences liked these songs very much. Kaise Mujhe Song Actually, in the Tamil Version there was a Rangola Song, which we removed it in Hindi. Though the song was good, it didn't fit the situation properply. Keeping a duet song at a time, when the heroine is supposed to be in a state of danger or suspense wasn't a good choice. It was my mistake, as the placement of the song was wrong, though the song was good. So, we wanted to remove that song in Hindi. So, there were only 4 songs remaining. Aamir Khan was also telling that " Qayamat se qayamat Tak" –a pure love story itself had only 4 songs, and so we thought of continuing with the same trend of having just 4 songs only. At that moment, for that Suttum Vizhi Sudare situation, we needed a melody tune, and he gave us two tunes. I liked both the tunes very much. I was in a dilemma to select which one and reject the another. When I was continuously listening to both the tunes, suddenly, I got a feel, as to why not put one tune at a place where Asin hands over the Rs 1 lac to Aamir. ( That Oh Ho Ho bit of Benny Dayal ) That was a small separation bit, and I suddenly started to think of all other shots. The tune was very impressive. Aamir Khan usually doesn't Okay anything so easily, and its so tough. I gave him the tune, and ask him to hear it twice. After he hearing it, I started telling him the visuals. He liked it with the visuals, and the tune and okayed it. So the tune was an inspiration to do such a visual for the song. Rahman Sir and Aamir Khan were thick friends from before, and when we were finalizing the technicians for the movie, Aamir's comfort factor was of high priority to me, and we wanted Rahman Sir. -- regards, Vithur
