RAHMAN* *by Vishal Oberoi* A.R. Rahman has officially created a musical world where exception has become the norm. By redefining his sound each and every time, he gives a unique spin to all of his projects. "Delhi-6" is no deviant from his hyper-experimental streak as he successfully bridges the traditional sounds of traditional India with world music elements, once again. The most interesting track on the album would have to be "Bhor Bhaye", where Rahman uses an old audio recording of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan singing the classical piece back in the day, interspersed with Shreya Ghoshal's rendition, today – a unique technique which gives the song an other-worldly appeal. The title track is energetic and funky. Songs like "Delhi-6" truly put Bollywood on the international music radar because they sum up the cosmopolitan and global appeal of modern Indian music. "Dil Gira Dafatan" is subtle and haunting. "Rehna Tu" and "Kaala Bandar" are distinctively funky in a quasi-hip/hop-R&B style. Rahman personally voices the former and, as always, he saves the best for himself. The title and the traditional feel of "Genda Phool" don't prepare you for the percussive pattern that follows. The musical fusion on this track is balanced brilliantly. The sixer on "Delhi-6" would have to be "Masakali", which kicks off with accordion and salsa sounds, and follows through with Mohit Chauhan singing truly Delhi-ite lyrics, in a genre very different from Mohit's usual somber love songs. Once again, Rahman uses some interesting rhythmic vocals, which make the listener sit up and listen. The opening alaap of "Delhi-6" is very catchy, and seems to form the theme of the film. * Balance sheet: *Yet another phenomenon from the never-ending repertoire of A.R. Rahman. Each element on this soundtrack, right from the selection of instruments, interludes and vocalists, to the blending of genres and structure of melodies, is almost hand-woven in true ARR style. Brilliant stuff! -A
