B.H. Abdul Hameed on FM Rainbow

I consider listening to A.R.Rahman's Tunes in Nadaswaram to have a different
taste altogether. You would have also noticed this. When the same tunes are
played by Nadaswaram maestros, the tunes appear as if they have been
composed specially for Nadaswaram musicians. His melody songs excite us more
than his other songs which are only for excitement purpose.

Q :- During the year 1993, when I had a chance to Interview The So Called
Musical Godfather Shri. S.V. Venkatraman, he gave a very different sort of
information. During his film music days, when there were only Black & White
Films, he says that the tunes were of a particular colour. For the same, he
would give the tunes to others, and would ask them as to what all colours
would come up in their minds, when they listen to those tunes.

When you compose music , do those tunes resemble to any sort of colours in
your mind ? Is there any connection between tunes and colours ?

AR :- You have asked a good question. I have to answer after a long thought
to myself. More than a colour, we can say a scenic image would be perfect.
For eg " Tu Hi Re" ( Uyire song ) , there would be an endless clife, a
mountain which would be completely visible. ( Such sort of an Imagery would
be our thought ) . So, there is a kind of answer to this question. In some
tunes, we get some sort of peace .

For eg ;- Vellai Pookal ( The colour comes there in the song itself ) ,
Pachai NIrame,. In these songs, we would have intentionally brought colour.

So more than colour, it is the scenic image which is my belief. Sometimes it
is space. Blach Holes, Space, Universe….. All these images come up in my
mind. But its definitely unique with him ( Mr. Venkatraman ) that he is able
to think of colours and compose music.
