The Tamil film industry on February 23 hailed A R Rahman’s double-delight
Oscar win as a “rare achievement” for the country and said that the music
composer’s feat will give a new lease of life to the industry.

A host of artistes, including Kamal Hassan and Suriya, congratulated Rahman
for winning two Oscar awards, the first Indian to achieve the historic feat
and said that the ‘Mozart of Madras’ has made the entire nation proud.
43-year-old Rahman bagged Oscars for Original Score in the Slumdog
Millionaire, named the best at the 81st Academy Awards, and also won the
Best Song award for the foot-tapping number Jai ho in the film.

Kamal Hassan, who has worked with Rahman in many ventures said that he was
proud of the maestro as an Indian and was looking forward to meet him. “I am
looking forward to meet Rahman, with whom I have to discuss the new film we
are currently working on,” the veteran actor said.

Recalling his more than 10-year-long relationship with Rahman, Kamal Hassan
said that the music composer was a hard worker who never looks at the clock
while working. “The only difference between me and Rahman is that I work in
the day and he works even during night. He has sacrificed his sleep often to
complete his work,” he told television channels.

After the remarkable success of Roja, there was no looking back for Rahman,
who his close friends in the industry call a humble personality. “From the
very early days when we both worked for advertisements to this day, one
thing has not changed with Rahman. That is his humility,” noted
cinematographer Rajiv Menon said.

What made Rahman’s music click with the listeners was the refreshing use of
percussions, sound and melody, most of which were inspired from Indian folk
music.

Rahman, who is fondly called as Isai Puyal in Tamil, has rendered music for
over 150 films in Tamil and he always respected his mother- tongue, which
came to the fore on February 23 when he said Ella pughalum iraivanuke after
receiving the Oscars. Another close friend of Rahman, noted Tamil lyricist
Vairamuthu attributed the music composer’s Oscar win to his sincerity and
dedication towards work and humbleness.

“He is a very humble man. He is simply simple and down-to-earth. I am proud
of Rahman, especially as a person who wrote lyrics for 90 per cent of his
songs,” he said.

Rahman, who is rarely seen at public functions, devotes most of his spare
time to his large family consisting of mother, wife, three children and four
sisters.
