You can agree or disagree about Jai Ho's oscar worthy status, that's fine. I don't think anyone is less of a Rahman fan if they think that Jai Ho is not a good enough song to win an award or if they think it's not one of Rahman's best. I like the song a lot for its energy and uplifting quality, but don't think it's one of Rahman's best compositions in terms of pure music. In terms of positive emotions and inspiration for the young and young at heart, I think it is one of his best.
I don't take Jagjit's comments seriously and neither should anyone here. As talented and well known Jagjit is, I frankly find him to be one of the most arrogant and condescending musical artists out there today (based on interviews, TV appearances, comments made to the media, etc. etc.). He has an extremely narrow definition of "good music" and is quite rigid minded in general. Whether Jagjit or anyone else likes it or not, the fact is that the song Jai Ho has touched millions of people and sent people who watched the song in theaters feeling very positive and hopeful. It's all about the raw emotions, not the music or lyrics by themselves. You cannot isolate any one element of this song and declare perfection. It's how the song fit into the whole scheme of the plot and ending and the emotions that were generated within people. Oscars are not awarded frivolously and for no reason. There's a reason why this song was given an award whether you agree or disagree. Mr. Singh and his comments do not deserve this much attention in our ARR fan group here. If you asked ARR himself what he thought of Mr. Singh's comments, ARR would just joke about it or might say, "it's not one of my best songs, even though it touched people. everyone is entitled to their own opinions". ARR himself would not get upset about something so trivial.
