" Nearby Chennai's Thiruvallur is a place by name Kizhanoor, where Rahman's
grand father whose name was Rajagopal Bagavathar was residing. He used to
conduct Musical Sessions of Ramyanam, Mahabharatham day and night in those
days. Crowds of people would gather and would love the work like anything.

In those times, there were none who didnt know about Rajagopal Bagavathar or
not to have heard about him atleast. For him, in the year 1933 was born his
son R. Gunashekhar.

For some period of time, Gunasekhar was employed with Tamil Nadu Electricity
Board, and as an effect and influence of hearing the musical discourses and
sessions of his father, he started learning and got influenced in music.

As he was learning music, in days to come, his interest diverted towards
Film Music. He started working for Malayalam Music Directors, as an
Assistant."
