Kozhikode, Sunday 03 May 2009: The wait is finally over. The maestro is here.
A.R. Rahman, who won two Oscars a couple of months ago, will lead a group of
leading playback singers in what promises to be an unforgettable show of live
music and more at the Corporation Stadium here on Sunday.
The show, “The Live In Concert — Jai Ho,” is Rahman’s first after his triumph
at the Annual Academy Awards in Hollywood in February and kicks off his world
tour. The film Slumdog Millionaire swept the awards and Rahman was nominated
thrice; he won both the awards possible (for the best original score and the
best original song) and underlined his stature as one of the finest composers
in the world.
Jai Ho had won the Oscar for the best song, beating Rahman’s own O Saya. The
songs to be performed here are not known. But Jai Ho will receive the loudest
of cheers. No other song in recent time has caught the people’s imagination as
much as this song has, the world over.
Rahman is one composer who has, during the last 17 years, scored scores of
chart-topping songs of every kind, be it melodious, semi-classical or fast
numbers. Whatever he chooses on Sunday night, will delight the ear.
Would he play a Malayalam song? He very well could, for he had composed music
for one Malayalam film, Yodha, and one of its songs, Padakali…, was pretty
popular.
Among the singers who will perform are Hariharan, Chithra, Sadhana Sargam,
Rashid Ali, Javed Ali, Benny Dayal, Mohammed Aslam and Sayanora.
The show is being organised by Global Kerala Initiative – Keraleeyam to raise
funds for the rehabilitation of HIV-positive children.
This is the first ever show by Rahman in Kerala.
